Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone mistake picture

Other mistake: In the scene where Professor Quirrell removes his headwrap to reveal the concealed Voldemort, Quirrell is obviously bald. However, if you carefully watch the scene with the troll, Quirell's sideburns are present after he shudders as the troll exhales, as they are in a couple of other shots. (01:10:43)

Suggested correction: The incident with the mountain troll took place on Halloween. The incident with Quirrell took place later in June. That is plenty of time for Quirrell to shave his head. Makes sense that he would as, I mean, I would rather shave my head if there was a guy on the back of it! Then I wouldn't have to worry about bumping his nose and him getting mad at me while using a comb. To be a mistake, we would need to see him with hair right before he is bald.

Continuity mistake: As Hermione hides under the sinks the troll smashes the front basin of the second sink on the right, leaving its faucets and surrounding sinks intact. Though in a view of the entire lavatory when the troll holds Harry upside down, from behind Hermione, the entire second sink, its faucets and trim are entirely missing and the entire fourth sink, which was never touched, is as well, both are gone. When the troll is knocked out, as Hermione stands up and moves toward Harry and Ron, though the faucets of the second sink are back, the front basin of the second sink is visibly broken again just as in the original shot, and the entire fourth sink is still inexplicably gone in this shot. Visible crew/equipment: As the troll begins to lift Harry with his huge club in the girls' lavatory, in the overhead shot as Harry hangs on to the edge of the 'real' club, at the bottom left of the screen the crew's blue equipment is perfectly visible. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.) (01:10:50)

Other mistake: While Harry is sitting on the troll's shoulders, the troll grabs Harry's right leg and pulls him off, but in the next shot the troll now has Harry hanging upside-down by his left leg. (01:11:10)

Continuity mistake: When Harry, Ron and Hermione are in the lavatory with the troll, the scattered wood pieces of the damaged cubicles change positions in consecutive shots throughout. For example, just before and after the troll drops Harry, in the close-ups of Harry the wood differs from the consecutive overhead shots. (01:11:35)

Continuity mistake: When Hedwig comes flying in delivering the broom, she drops it at an angle, but when Harry catches it it's completely horizontal. (01:11:50)

Continuity mistake: As Hermione walks toward the troll, just before she asks, "Is it dead?" the long towel hanging from the rod beside the sinks is visibly straight. When Harry lifts his wand with troll booger/bogey, in the shot of him as he grimaces and groans, the towel on the rod is visible behind him and it's messy. Yet when McGonagall, Snape and Quirrell walk in, the long towel is straight again. (01:12:00)

Continuity mistake: When Hedwig delivers the Nimbus 2000, as Harry catches it, the curve of the Nimbus' handle, the packaging and the way he grasps it all differ in the close-up and following shot. Then when Ron says, "Let's open it," he moves his goblet and plate to his left towards Hermione's goblet, yet in the next overhead shot his goblet is still on his right. (01:14:50)

Continuity mistake: The knotted tie string on Harry's Quidditch robe changes from extremely loose, to snug, to loose and so on, even in consecutive shots, from the time Harry speaks with Wood before they fly onto the pitch and throughout the match. This occurs with other members of both teams as well. (01:15:40)

Revealing mistake: During the Quidditch game, none of the players have shadows on the ground. (01:16:20)

Continuity mistake: Just after Slytherin scores ten points, Flint and his teammate surround Angelina. When one grabs the quaffle from Angelina, they fly past the second Gryffindor tower - we see the first Gryffindor tower, two staff towers (grey/black), Slytherin tower and the second Gryffindor tower behind them - then Angelina covers her head with her arm. However, in the next shot she actually crashes into the tower that she already flew past. (01:16:30)

Continuity mistake: In Harry's first Quidditch match, Gryffindor scores the first goal, then we see the commentator announce the goal and change Gryffindor's score to ten - making a goal worth ten points. Soon after, Gryffindor score again. We then see Slytherin score a goal, then another. They then score a third goal, and the commentator changes the score to 20 all, but it should be 20/30. Continuity mistake: In the quidditch scene, when Hermione sets fire to Snape's robes, the flame lights at a fold in the material, but in the next shot it's moved away from the folds. In fact, there are no signs of it having ever being burned there. (01:18:20)

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone mistake picture

Visible crew/equipment: During the Quidditch match as the players ride their broomsticks, visible in quite a few shots are the two wires that are attached to the broom handle, between their legs, that extend down with a clamped loop that goes around their feet. In some shots the wires between their legs are edited, but the wire loops around their feet are perfectly visible, like in the following example. When the Slytherin score hits 10 onscreen, in the next shot, as Flint shouts, "Take that side," the wire is completely visible at his right foot under his cloak. Two examples where the entire wires are visible are, when Flint grabs the club and says, "Gimme that!" the wires are blatantly visible and he then proceeds to slam the Bludger into Wood, who falls. Next close-up of one of the twins, the wires are visible before Flint starts to leap over him. (Don't confuse the cloak's long front ties for the wire). (01:19:00)

Continuity mistake: Just after Flint leaps over the Weasley twin, in the next shot Flint tosses the ball forward - toward the hoop - with the school to his left (viewer's right) and Ravenclaw, Slytherine, Gryffindor and two staff (black/grey) towers behind him, to his right. However, in the next shot as the ball flies through the hoop (close-up), it is actually the hoop at the other side of the pitch - we see (in order) the Slytherine, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor towers to the left of the screen. Other mistake: During the Quidditch match, Hermione looks in her binoculars up to where Harry is. If you look at the reflection in the binoculars, you can see Harry flailing around. She then looks over at Snape, but when we see the reflection in the binoculars, we still see Harry, as if she was looking up towards him. (01:20:40)

Visible crew/equipment: During the Quidditch match Harry's broomstick tries to shake him off, due to the spell. After Hermione tells Ron, "Leave it to me," in Harry's last close-up before he flips over, the seat that is attached to the broomstick, to make it more comfortable for Dan Radcliffe to sit on, is entirely visible. Glimpses of other seats can be had during the match as well. (01:20:50)

Question: I get that the DADA role is cursed because of Voldemort being denied the role when he applied for it at Hogwarts, but why does Dumbledore not let Snape take the role like he's wanted to every year? I thought Snape was a double agent (he spies on the Death Eaters and Voldemort for Dumbledore, and he pretends to be on Voldemort's side too), so unless Voldemort decides that he wants to get rid of him for being in the role, he's okay to take it on provided he's given it, and yet every year, Dumbledore turns down his application. Is it because Snape's too involved in Voldemort's side of things or some other reason? I hope I explained it well.

Heather Benton

Chosen answer: There are several reasons. First, the position is cursed, so there is little reason to give Snape the job when he will not last any longer than all the previous instructors. If Snape did become the DADA instructor, something could happen to him that could result in his being harmed, having to leave Hogwarts, or be otherwise incapacitated in some way; that would render him useless to Dumbledore as a double agent. Also, Dumbledore trusts Snape, but putting him in an environment where he is teaching about dark magic on a daily basis would be too tempting and emotionally compromising to someone who had been so easily seduced by the dark side. He could possibly relapse. It would be like having a recovering alcoholic work as a bartender. Of course, he does eventually become the DADA instructor, and lasted no longer than his predecessors.

In the movies it is never mentioned that DADA role was cursed by Voldemort.

This is true; though it doesn't say it's not either. With trying to fit 7 long books and years worth of pages of HP information in 2 and a half hours; as long as the movie doesn't say it's not cursed, with our knowledge, there is no problem with reporting that it is. Even directors of non-book movies do this all the time; leave background information out that helps explain things they just didn't have time so they explained it behind the scenes.
