The stranger is somehow related to Jim Duncan, the former sheriff. Jim was whipped to death by the town folk whose mine was on government land and had hired 3 gunmen to take him out. Just two people found that objectionable, and were spared by the end of the film. This stranger takes revenge for the town's wrong doings by making them do all sorts of ridiculous things; however he ultimately kills the 3 gunmen, whipping one of them in the same way Jim was whipped.

In the scene where Eastwood is watching "the city of Lago volunteers" training,he is drinking a beer. The first time he lifts the glass to drink, it is about half empty. After he says something to the man with the knife, he lifts the glass for another drink and it is nearly full.

At the end of the film when the Stranger (Clint Eastwood) is riding out of Lago, he passes a midget who is painting a name on a tombstone. In the next shot you see two more tombstones to the left. The names on these are "Sergio Leone" and "Don Siegel."
