Other mistake: The Titanosaurs are somehow able to be completely hidden in grass that doesn't even reach waist level on humans.
Factual error: When Martin Krebs is sitting in traffic, he looks in his driver's side rear view mirror, and the writing "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" is printed in a clear call-back to the first film. However, this repeats the mistake made in the first film: this writing is only on passenger side mirrors.

Answer: It could be argued that he was panicked and not thinking strategically, but realistically, this is an action movie, and that means more crashes, explosions, and mayhem for audience entertainment. There also has to be a plot device that strands them on the island.
