Trivia: A few weeks ahead of its release, angry fans of the discontinued Zack Snyder iteration of Superman launched an online campaign with the goal of negatively affecting the film's box office performance. When asked about the campaign, director James Gunn said, "I think we'll survive."
Trivia: In an interview with TMZ, former Superman actor Dean Cain bizarrely criticized this movie for making Superman "woke," - particularly with Superman being referred to as an immigrant - apparently oblivious to the fact that the character he once played has always been "woke." There was an even an episode of Lois and Clark in which government officials, including an INS agent, asked to see his paperwork, with the INS agent telling an annoyed Superman that he is an alien.
Trivia: The reporter from GBS on the street is played by Will Reeve, Christopher Reeve's son.
Trivia: James Gunn was originally offered the chance to direct a sequel to Man of Steel after he was fired by Marvel, but he opted to make The Suicide Squad instead. When Warner Bros decided to scrap the DCEU and start a new shared universe of films, Gunn was brought in to direct this film, as well as oversee the creation of the revamped DC universe of films.
Trivia: Lex Luthor tells Superman he created the clone using the DNA from a strand of Superman's hair. This is a reference from Superman IV: The Quest for Peace where Luthor (Gene Hackman) creates Nuclear Man from the DNA of a strand of Superman's hair.
Trivia: The film makes a few references to the 1978 original Superman film. Eve Teschmacher, who never appears in Superman comics, is from the original 1978 Superman film. Lex Luthor has a henchman named Otis, a reference to Ned Beatty's role in the original film.
Trivia: Michael Rosenbaum, who was the actor who played Lex Luthor in the Smallville TV series, does the voice of one of Lex's Raptors in this film. A sort of subtle passing of the torch moment.
