Hero (Nicolas Cage) robs the National Bleufeur bank with an accomplice and several people are killed. While still in the bank, Hero attacks his accomplice for killing a child and gets injured. Hero is subsequently arrested and imprisoned. Bernice, the (adopted) granddaughter of the Governor, goes joyriding one night with two friends, to experience some freedom, and ends up caught/abducted in Ghostland, an outlying wasteland. The Governor releases Hero on the condition that he goes to Ghostland to find and bring back his granddaughter. The "catch" is that Hero must wear a suit outfitted with sensors and six bombs - two bombs around his throat, arms and testicles. (The bombs around his testicle are a deterrent to making moves on Bernice.) There is also a time monitor attached to his wrist and he has three days to get Bernice to say her name into the monitor and a total of five days to return Bernice.
