Doctor Sleep (2019)

Forty years after escaping from the Overlook Hotel, Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) has become an alcoholic. As a result, his shining ability isn't as strong as it was when he was younger. The Overlook was abandoned after the incident with Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson and Henry Thomas). Former Overlook caretaker Delbert Grady (Philip Stone) manipulated Jack into attempting to kill Danny and Wendy (Shelley Duvall and Alex Essoe). Meanwhile, an evil magician hat-wearing woman named Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and her cult, the True Knot sense children who have the shining gift and capture them in order to consume their shining gifts, which appear in the form of steam. The children are killed in the process. Rose the Hat and her cultists are psychic vampires who seek to become immortals by consuming the steam. Members of the True Knot include Crow Daddy (Zahn McClarnon), Grampa Flick (Carel Struycken), Barry the Chunk, Apron Annie, Silent Sarey, Diesel Doug, and Short Eddie. The True Knot have been around for hundreds of years and have blue-white eyes when feeding on the shine of children. However, the True Knot members still eat human food despite not being humans.

Rose the Hat captures a teenage girl named Snakebite Andi, who has the ability to control the minds of others, which Rose believes will help the True Knot capture more of the shining children a lot easier. Snakebite Andi is turned into a psychic vampire and joins the True Knot. Meanwhile, Danny has been psychically communicating with a girl named Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran), who possesses a shining gift more powerful than Danny's. Dave Stone (Zackary Momoh) and his beautiful wife Lucy Stone (Jocelin Donahue) don't know what to make of Abra's powers, but they love her nonetheless. While shopping in a supermarket, Rose senses Abra's power and tries to enter Abra's mind, but Abra uses her powers to blow Rose out of her mind, sending Rose sliding across an aisle floor. A store clerk almost picks up Rose's magic hat, but Rose picks it up first. Not wanting to put Lucy and Dave in danger, Abra doesn't tell them about her encounter with Rose. Rose later enters Abra's mind through astral projection, but Abra injures Rose's hand in a trap drawer and briefly enters Rose's own mind, angering Rose. Abra psychically casts Rose out of her mind. Abra asks Danny to help her against Rose. Grampa Flick dies of starvation, and the other True Knot members consume his steam. Rose angrily plots with Crow Daddy to capture Abra and torture her for years so the True Knot can have a large, endless supply of steam to consume. While Rose will send the rest of her followers after Abra, Crow plans to come after Abra from a different direction in case the others fail, figuring Abra will not sense him while she's distracted with the other evil True Knot members. Rose the Hat is so enraged, and she doesn't care if Crow and the others kill Lucy and Dave, as long as the True Knot will get to feed on Abra's shine.

Danny is visited by the spirit of the late Overlook Hotel chef Hallorann (Scatman Crothers and Carl Lumbly), who taught Danny how to build special boxes in his mind in order to lock up the evil ghosts from the Overlook who still haunted Danny after his escape from the hotel. Hallorann tells Danny to protect Abra from the True Knot. Meanwhile, Lucy has temporarily left to visit her grandmother, leaving Abra with Dave. Danny and his friend Billy bring an astral projection image of Abra to a forest to lure Rose's cultists. The real Abra stays home with Dave by her side. Rose stays behind at her camp in order to psychically sense whether her cultists capture Abra. A gun battle erupts between Danny, Billy and the True Knot, resulting in the cultists being killed. Rose feels the pain of each True Knot member as they are killed. Billy fatally shoots Snakebite Andi, but she uses her power and orders Billy to kill himself before she disappears. Dave is killed by Crow Daddy, who attempts to bring Abra to Rose. During the ride, Danny and Abra combine their powers to cause Crow Daddy's van to crash into a tree, killing Crow Daddy.

A vengeful Rose the Hat takes her remaining steam canisters and consumes the steam, gaining more power. Danny reunites with Abra, and he tells her that Rose will keep coming after them. The only way to defeat Rose is to lure her to the Overlook Hotel, which is as dangerous for her as it is for Danny and Abra. With all of her followers dead, Rose is now obsessed with killing Abra and Danny, so she will not sense the dangerous evil force that lives in the Overlook Hotel. That evil force will not take kindly to a psychic vampire attempting to feed on Danny and Abra's shine, which the evil force also wants to feed on. After finding Dave dead, a horrified Lucy calls Abra, who says she is OK. Danny plans on getting Abra back to Lucy after they've killed Rose the Hat.
