I rented this movie from RedBox.

I love the original two films staring Ron Pearlman as our shaved horned hero. When I heard that the third film in what was meant to be a trilogy was finally confirmed to be dead, and that this reboot was being made... I was upset to say the least.
However, seeing the trailers for this film did actually get my hopes up, that it would be good and en enjoyable experience.

I was very wrong.
This movie is a shameful piece of cinema that looks, feels, and behaves terribly. The acting, writing style, and general feel of the movie just made me think of the very bad hero films of the 90's, like Spawn. And if you're movie is making me think of Spawn... you've got some serious problems.
Not only that, but the effects were terrible. The CGI was ugly, and clunky. Most of the effects looked like they would be barely passable for the early 2000's... and this is a movie from 2019.
That is not a good combo at all.

The writing was horrible and the pacing like an adhd kid on Acid. The film had no real aim, or sense of direction, just seeming like it was trying to move from one random scene to another and just piecing them together however they could.
And the humor was very hit or miss, with most of the time it being a miss.
The only reason I give this movie 2 stars, is because at least some of it was enjoyable. There were actually a few good laughs, and some of the actors did feel like they were trying. Just they were not giving very good material to work with.

I had real hopes for this film... and I was massively let down.

Mistake Status: It's a hero film. My bread and butter for this site. Of course I'll revisit it and give it a good thorough dissecting once I get a working disk drive for my laptop.

Hellboy (2019) is much like reading a favorite comic book series that's been drawn and written by a guest artist and writer-in other words, most of the elements are there, but everything is just a bit different to rankle the true fans. Here, a weary and scarred Hellboy must stop another supernatural menace in the form of a powerful supernatural referred to as the Blood Queen, with the help of soldier-turned -were-jaguar and a young psychic he rescued as a child from malevolent fairies. Gorier than the prior films, this reboot of the franchise relies heavily on CGI creatures and chaos but lacks the kittens and soul that made the earlier films enjoyable. Ron Perlman's subtle nuances are replaced by David Harbour's struggle to balance hammy with depressed and pained, while Milla Jovovich's casting as the villain never touches the hem of Maleficent's gown. It could have been a good film, but for all the splatter and violence, you won't be distracted from noticing M.I.A. characters such as the erudite amphibian Abe Sapien or the tense pyrotechnic Liz. For die-hard Hellboy fans in need of a fix, but not much there for anyone else to fully enjoy.

Part of the great tragedy of the new "Hellboy" is that it had so much potential. And on the surface, the elements are all there. Director Neil Marshall has a great track record, the cast is serviceable and the visuals are frequently interesting. But as a film... it just doesn't work. The writing is dreadful and completely aimless. The pacing is a complete mess. The characters are under-developed. And the visual direction is patchy and inconsistent at best. Fans can fall back on the "well, it looks more like the comic than the other movies" argument all they want... but minor aesthetic similarities to the source material can't fix a film that is fundamentally broken at its core. 2019's "Hellboy" is an unlikable slog, and it's among the worst mainstream films I've seen in recent memory.

Can I give less than 1 stars?

Revealing mistake: In the beginning of the movie, when Hellboy is speaking on the phone with "Dad", he's speaking on on speaker, but when the phone shows up, instead of showing a screen of a call on speaker with the duration on the call, the screen shows what would appear if he was receiving a phone call before accepting or declining. Nimue the Blood Queen: Be my king. And be revered for who you really are. We belong together, you and I.
Hellboy: We do. But it's not going to work, you know, cause I'm a Capricorn and you're fucking nuts.

Trivia: Original "Hellboy" film series director Guillermo del Toro tried for nearly ten years to get a third film made in the series. However, due to a variety of circumstances, including budgetary concerns, his original vision for the third film was unable to be made. This movie was then written by series creator Mike Mignola and writer Andrew Crosby, with the intention of following on from the first two films. However, del Toro and original star Ron Perlman declined to be involved, feeling they should not make the film as it wouldn't pay off the storylines set up by the first two movies. Mignola and the producers then decided that rather than trying to make a direct sequel to the first two films without del Toro and Perlman, it should be rewritten to be a stand-alone reboot. References to the other films (and certain characters like Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman) were removed, and replaced with new concepts to set it apart from what came before.
