After meeting Ben in the desert, and Ben being killed by a sniper shot, Ray races back to the motel only to find that Sheriff Howard is there and his wife is missing. He uses the tunnel to room 10's mirror and sees that Howard has Ray's wife Maggie tied to the bed torturing her, and plans to kill Ray and rape Maggie and then kill her to make it look like a murder suicide. Ray gets his attention to the mirror by knocking on it, and when Howard is close enough, Ray dives through it and wrestles him to the ground where they fight, stabbing each other with knives and glass. They each crawl across the floor to their pistols but Ray gets the first shot and kills Howard. He then takes his wife to their truck and they ride off into the night.
Continuity mistake: Ray is in their new room and pulls out a picture of his daughter. He sits on the bed looking at it and then looks up, staring out the window. His wife walks in as he's still looking straight ahead and then it cuts to an angle from behind and suddenly Ray's head is titled down with him looking down at the picture again. Only for him to lift his head to look out the window again a couple seconds later. (00:13:25)
