Rain Man

Rain Man (1988)

2 plot holes - chronological order

(9 votes)

Plot hole: Raymond's rigidly set routines force him to watch the TV shows "People's Court" and "Jeopardy" at the same times every day. Traveling on the road, however, this would be almost completely impossible, since the two shows aired in syndication. Not all cities aired them at the same times.

Plot hole: Raymond starts the toaster oven. 30 seconds later it starts smoking enough to set off the alarm. It takes longer than 30 seconds to heat up and there's nothing in it so why is it smoking?

Continuity mistake: In the scene in the restaurant where Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman are trying to order breakfast, Hoffman's character fixes the salt and pepper shaker a certain way. In the next shot they are opposite the way he fixed them. Then in the next shot they are back to the way he had fixed them. (00:37:15)

Trivia: When this movie gave a test screening, it got terrible reactions from the audience, mostly because of the ending and the public's lack of understanding of Autism. One test audience member even went so far to say that he was mad Raymond didn't "snap out of it" at the end.

Question: Why did Charlie take Raymond to meet Iris for the "date"? He knew that there was no real "date" because Iris is a prostitute. So why make him wait for her?

Answer: Susanna was there as well; Charlie just used the "date" as a reason for the three of them to go down for a drink together. He knew Iris wouldn't show up.
