The Quick and the Dead

Sharon Stone realized the only way to beat Gene Hackman is to instill fear in him first. She fakes her own death in a shootout with Russell Crowe. As Gene and Russell face off, the town clock is blown up, shaking up Gene. As she emerges from the smoke, he finds out who she is. Then, she kills him. Russell becomes the new sheriff.

Continuity mistake: When Sharon Stone confronts Gene Hackman at the end, she throws the marshal star at his feet. It is an inch or two in front of his boots. After he is shot, he gets flung backwards several feet. Stone then picks the star up and throws it to Russell Crowe. She picks it up from behind Hackman's body, several feet away from where it landed but still sticking out of the sand the same way.

Trivia: Star and Co-producer Sharon Stone was so adamant that Leonardo DiCaprio be cast as "The Kid" that when the production company refused his hiring, wanting a higher profile actor, she paid his salary personally out of her own pocket. She also hand-picked and insisted on the hiring of Russell Crowe, but fortunately for her pocketbook the production company agreed. (Source: IMDb)

Question: Who shoots Herod the first time in the final showdown with Ellen? I have replayed the video several times and her gun does not fire until the second, kill shot to the head. Cort is just behind her. Are we supposed to surmise that he shot Herod first? Just a mistake?

Answer: Ellen shoots Herod both times. There is a muzzle flash and sound effect from her gun just as Herod's shot hits her. If it helps, watch the scene in slow motion.
