A definite improvement over the underwhelming "Paranormal Activity 4, " "The Marked Ones" is a mildly enjoyable one-off side-story in the series that manages to entertain and enthrall, even if it doesn't have that much impact on the main narrative. The characters are charming, the scares are eerie enough, and I enjoyed some of the unexpected twists and turns. (Well, at least outside of the head-scratching conclusion that I won't spoil.) It's a decent effort, and I'd give it a mild recommendation for series fans. 3 out of 5.

Continuity mistake: The girl that Jesse brought into the house, Penelope, was wearing a blue skirt with leggings when they arrived at the house. However when she walks around the corner to take off her shirt she comes back with just black leggings on.

Trivia: The film was written to be a spin-off the "Paranormal Activity" series aimed primarily at a Latino market. Hence, it was not called "Paranormal Activity 5."

Question: Why would Jessie's friend take the chance of stealing that piece of paper with Ally's number on it, while their gangster "friend" who is supposed to be pretty scary is right there, when he is sitting there filming the whole damn thing and could just go back and get the number off the camera?
