Factual error: The settlement reached with the negotiator would still have to be approved by a family court judge. Parents' relationships with their child(ren) are taken very seriously by the family courts. A judge would seriously question why a present ("in the picture") biological father's parental rights were being terminated. The agreement (with no visitation by the father) would not be viewed as being "in the child's best interests." A court order approving it as written would not be issued. (00:09:36 - 00:20:33)

Revealing mistake: The way in which the flame from the fallen candle started burning the wall painting of the family, as well as how the fire spread (rather, didn't spread) and looked, reveal the fire was computer-generated, not real. (00:24:23)

Separation (2021)
Factual error: A negotiator is supposed to be neutral and detached (objective), but the divorce negotiator was biased in favor of lawyers Maggie and her father Paul. Even though the negotiator said, "We're all here for the same reason. We want what's best for the child", he totally failed to consider the biological father's (Jeff's) parental rights and Jennifer's right to see her father. Jeff pointed out, "I don't think it's fair she [Maggie] gets a fancy, mean negotiator just because it's her dad [Paul]." (00:09:36 - 00:10:04)

Stupidity: Jennifer sat on a bench in the hallway while her arguing parents and maternal grandfather were meeting with a negotiator about the divorce settlement. The door to the meeting room was left open, allowing eight-year-old Jennifer to hear everything. Parents Maggie and Jeff also frequently argued at home when Jennifer was within hearing distance. Parents - especially one educated as a lawyer - should know better. (00:10:56)

Separation (2021)
Stupidity: On the phone, Marion told Paul, "I'm nearly certain she'll [Maggie] get full custody, but if you fight this, you stand to lose everything, even visitation to see your daughter. Sign the contract..." Jeff wanted to see Jenny and, other than being unemployed for three years, there were no reasons his parental rights should be terminated. It was not "in the best interests" of Jenny to relocate to Seattle and never see her father again. Fighting it, Jeff would have likely won custody of Jenny. (00:15:39)

Factual error: Paul made a big deal out of son-in-law Jeff getting the New York "brownstone" [worth several million dollars], but an exterior view of Jeff looking out a window shows he is NOT in a true brownstone. This must be an end unit, but a brownstone should have all brick on the exterior side - not brick part-way and cement blocks the rest of the way. (00:38:39)

Revealing mistake: The staircase to the second floor bedrooms is awkward, not in proportion to the rest of the house, and usually only the section that is needed for a particular shot is shown (and the section is most likely a replica). In particular, the staircase would be quite steep - and extend well into the attic! - if the upper portion continued at the same grade/angle as the lower steps. The perpendicular entrance is too short and both posts are not always on the floor (one may be at the end of the steps). (00:23:04 - 00:28:12)

Other mistake: After the fire extinguisher was sprayed to put out the flame on the wall painting, there should have been some debris or markings to reflect the use of the extinguisher, but there were no obvious indicators. (00:24:50)

Trivia: It may be difficult to tell based on her acting "skills", but Mamie Gunner ("Maggie Vahn") is Meryl Streep's daughter. The lesser-known Don Gunner is Mamie's father.

Continuity mistake: Views of Paul falling (pushed) down the stairs showed different positions from the top of the stairs, the landing, and from the downstairs floor. His back ended up on the landing with his legs bent and feet on the third step. (The form/size of the step itself was awkward - there wasn't enough room for Paul's whole foot.) A view from the top of the steps showed his left leg on the landing, bent with his foot under his right leg, which was on the step. A side view showed yet another position. (01:33:33)

Revealing mistake: When Grandpa Paul Rivers (probably a substitute of some kind) was falling (pushed) down the stairs, his body was "floating" and not actually making contact with the steps. (01:33:30)
