Trivia: Léon and Mathilda were meant to get even closer than they did in the final release of the film, including a scene where Léon accidentally walks in on Mathilda washing up in the bathroom-but concerns for decency and potential objections from Portman's parents put a stop to that.

Trivia: According to the video extras, Natalie Portman was so in love with the clothes that the character she played of Mathilda Lando wore that she had hoped to keep some of the clothes, noting that Mathilda's tastes were far better and "cooler" than her own at 12 years of age.

Trivia: During the film, the character Mathilda was depicted as a smoker even before she met Léon and can be seen holding a cigarette early on. Despite assurances from Director Luc Besson, Natalie Portman's parents were so opposed to the idea that they wouldn't allow their daughter to be seen with even candy cigarettes in her mouth, so she only "holds" it, which actually added subtext.

Trivia: According to commentary included in the DVD release, in order to understand how to interact with a young Natalie Portman as Mathilda Lando, Jean Reno was encouraged to act as if he himself were a child.
