Trivia: After coming up with the concept of a story taking place in real time over the course of one day, Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran originally planned on the show being about the 24 hours leading up to a wedding. After realizing that it would be difficult to think of reasons for a bride and groom to be forced to stay awake for 24 straight hours, they decided that the show could instead be about a federal agent being forced to protect a politician from assassination for 24 hours - which became the plot of season 1 and the basis for the show.

Trivia: Co-creator Joel Surnow originally named Carlos Bernard's character "Tonio" Almeida, but Kiefer Sutherland was unable to say this name and ended up calling him "Tony" instead.

Trivia: The romance between Tony and Michelle was not originally in the script. The writers decided to add this subplot after observing the natural chemistry between Carlos Bernard and Reiko Aylesworth during the filming of the early episodes.

Trivia: The main character of the show was originally going to be named Jack Barrett. The creators of the show decided they didn't like the name, and changed it to "Bauer" after Elaine Bauer, an executive at Imagine Entertainment.

Trivia: Over the course of each season, Sterling Rush (head of the props department) takes an average of 10 to 12 thousand photos of sets, props and characters, in order to ensure continuity between scenes and episodes.
