They bought "courier" tickets, in which you would give up part of your check-in allowance (e.g. one bag) to take a package for a courier service in return for a substantial discount. A representative of the courier service then picks up the bag/package at the destination. These tickets were popular with backpackers back in the day, but largely don't exist anymore due to the changing market, proliferation of discount airlines, non-existent baggage allowances, security concerns, etc.
