Minority Report (2002)

Question: The pre-cogs had a red ball for the incident that happened at the end, but consider this: Lamar intended to shoot Anderton, but didn't go through with it (which we learn at the beginning does not trigger pre-visions). Further, he committed suicide, which we also learn earlier is something the pre-cogs don't see. So my question is: how could there have been a red ball? The pre-cogs shouldn't have seen anything.

Matty Blast

Answer: The red ball indicates a crime of passion, not something planned, that is a brown ball like Anderton got. Lamar did not plan beforehand to shoot Anderton, but he intended it and would have done so if not for the precogs. Because he knows the precogs predicted his intention to kill Anderton, he instead chose to go a different route, probably at the very last second as the precrime team closed in on them. It is the same choice Anderton had in the apartment. It's either do as you intended, or change your mind at the last moment.

Other mistake: At the beginning of the movie, we learn that the precogs "do not see what you intend to do, only what you will do" and that they cannot see suicides. At the end, Burgess intends to kill Anderton but does not go through with it; he commits suicide instead. Given these two facts, the precogs should not have seen Burgess' confrontation with Anderton at the end, and a red ball should not have been created.

Suggested correction: Burgess intention was in fact to kill Anderton, but the knowledge of the precogs predicting his murder attempt, the conflict inside his conscious, and the sound of the arriving helicopters made him change his mind at the last second, just like Anderton did in the apartment. The point is they have a choice, and having knowledge of that, only that, changes the future and makes it different from the visions.

Other mistake: Leo Crow grabs Anderton's gun and they each fight for control of it. Crow succeeds in forcing Anderton's hand to pull the trigger, killing Crow. The problem is, right after the gun is fired, we see a shot of Anderton with his arm fully extended and with his entire hand holding the entire gun, as if he had aimed and fired the gun himself. Such a sequence of events is at least totally illogical if not physically impossible. (01:44:10)

Question: In the movie there are two different types of eye-scanners. The cops and the spiders use a beam of light that has to scan a person's eye for 1-4 seconds to identify the person. Yet advertisements, stores, and the subway use eye-scanners that can identify a person in what seems like 1/16th of a second (similar to a camera). Does anyone know if both types of eye-scanners exist, and if so, why are they different?

Matty Blast

Chosen answer: Retinal scanning does exist and is actually in use, but not at the level shown in the movie. The "Ad" scanners are less accurate and not definitive, while the police scanners can provide absolute identification. It's the difference between identifying someone by their face vs. running their fingerprints.

Continuity mistake: When we first see the numbers on room 1009, they are all even. Just before Anderton rotates the "6" to its correct position, however, the number is slightly raised.

Continuity mistake: When Anderton is finally caught at Lara's place, we see a shot (from behind Anderton) of the precop resting the top of the halo on the back of Anderton's head. In the next shot, the halo is rested onto his head again. (02:02:00)

Question: When Anderton is viewing the images of the Leo Crow murder, he describes the building as "federal housing." But when he and Agatha get there, the guy at the desk says, "Rooms are $95 a night" (or whatever the price was). Is it federal housing, or is it a hotel? It can't be both, can it?

Matty Blast

Chosen answer: It could be both. "Federal Housing" could be a description of the style - it might originally have been built as federal housing, but converted into a hotel at a later date.

Continuity mistake: During the Howard Marks previsions, Anderton notices that the two images of the kid and the man show the kid on different sides. At first, he rotates his hand counter-clockwise (from his point-of-view) to see the image where the kid is on his right, and clockwise to the one where the kid is on the left. The camera cuts away, then cuts back; now the opposite is true (clockwise = kid is on the right, counter-clockwise = kid on left).

Question: When Anderton, after his eye surgery, has his dream about the day he lost his son, look carefully at the people shown at poolside after Anderton discovers that his son is gone. For about a second, the camera follows a suspicious-looking man wearing a fairly wide-brimmed hat, and a towel around his shoulders. While we see this man, the video suddenly becomes "choppy," as though something significant were happening. The camera also zooms in toward his face. This all happens in about one second. Are we to assume that this is the man responsible for kidnapping Anderton's son?

Continuity mistake: When we see the Leo Crow previsions for the first time, we see the numbers "9" and "6" backwards because we are seeing the previsions from behind the screen. But in the cyberparlor we see the previsions from the same side that Anderton and Riley are watching them, and the numbers are still backward.
