Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977)
Directed by: John Boorman
Starring: Max von Sydow, Richard Burton, Louise Fletcher, Linda Blair
Factual error: In the hypnosis scene, when father Marrin is crossing himself, he is doing it the wrong way - from right to left. (00:20:40)
Factual error: Father Lamont tears out the Regan doppelganger's heart from where her stomach should be. Even allowing that she's a manifestation of a demon and may not conform to human anatomy, it isn't plausible that Lamont would know to grab for her heart through her abdomen.
Trivia: Director John Boorman initially didn't want to make the movie as he found the first film distasteful. However, when he saw the story treatment, his perspective changed and he viewed "Exorcist II" as a rebuttal to his perception of the original film's darkness and a tale about "goodness" winning. Boorman subsequently admitted that his views were wrong and that the movie didn't work, and that he shouldn't have made it since he "denied what the audience wanted."
Trivia: This sequel was so notoriously hated, supposedly during the first sneak-preview screening, studio executives in the audience were chased out of the theater by a group of angry filmgoers. William Friedkin, director of the original film but not this sequel, also saw a few minutes of the movie while visiting the Technicolor labs and described the experience by exclaiming, "I see some guy on the back of a bumblebee or some fucking thing... it was unreal! Ugh! And I left!"
Sharon: All the time, I longed to see her. Finally, I came back and found that when I'm with her is the only time when I'm at peace. Why would that be? I can't understand it, it frightens me.
Father Lamont: Have you tried a psychiatrist or a priest?
Sharon: I'm talking to one now, aren't I?
Regan MacNeil: Call me by my dream name. Call me.
Father Lamont: I've flown this route before. It was on the wings of a demon.
