Mask

Mask (1985)

Plot summary

(5 votes)

Rocky is a teenager boy who suffers from a disease that results in the severe disfiguration of his face. His personal trials and tribulations are showcased, along with the personal problems faced by his mother (Cher).

Other mistake: When Rocky is in the funhouse looking at himself, he appears to look relatively "normal". But it's very obvious that it's got nothing to do with the mirror, and more to do with the removal of a lot of makeup. For example, Rocky usually has almost no nose, but in the mirror he has Eric Stoltz's very well developed nose.

Rusty Dennis: First you told me he was gonna be retarded, then you told me he was gonna be blind and deaf. If I'd dug his grave every time one of you geniuses told me he was gonna die, I'd be eating fuckin' chop suey in China by now.

Trivia: Director Peter Bogdanovich's first choice for the part of Rocky Dennis was Anthony Michael Hall. Hall turned down the part because he didn't like the idea of hiding his face during the whole film with make-up. Eric Stoltz was then cast instead.

Suggested correction: I don't know if you are right or wrong, but I thought Eric was given the role because he sang "Rock-y" during his audition. [I'm not really asserting that you are wrong; I had to pick that option in order to be able to reply here.].

Question: How did Rocky die? Was it because of his condition?

Answer: His official cause of death was listed as "sudden arrhythmic death syndrome," which is basically just when someone dies unexpectedly, usually during sleep. It's widely believed that it was caused by his disorder, as his disorder often causes early death, but to my knowledge it was never definitively proven.
