Penelope breaks the curse herself("one of your own") through self-acceptance. Max's real name is Johnny, and he's not a blue-blood so could not break the curse anyway. Penelope and Johnny get together. The butler Jake is Clara's witch mother who put the curse on in the first place. Penelope becomes a teacher.
