Continuity mistake: During the opening credits, Kate leaves the Lake House via the kitchen, where we see the indoor tree is branches only-no leaves. Then from her car she looks back to the house, where we now see that tree is covered in orange leaves.

Kate realises Alex is the one who died in the beginning at Daley Plaza on Valentine's Day. She writes him one final note asking him not to come looking for her just to wait 2 more years. He does and they meet at the lake house, kiss and they stay together.

Question: Why would Alex put a letter in that mailbox? Did he know this lady was going to show up?
Answer: The mailbox is where you would send and receive mail.
