Continuity mistake: In the second tent scene, just before Jack and Ennis kiss, Jack's left arm changes from being at his side in the first shot of Ennis (as Jack touches Ennis' face) to up around Ennis' neck in the second shot of Ennis (after we see Jack's face). Ennis and Jack meet in 1963 when they are hired to heard sheep across Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming. At first it appears there is nothing between them as they tend to just work and sleep on opposites sides of the mountain. One night Ennis is sleeping Jack's camp and the temperature drops down to freezing. Jack inviotes Ennis to sleep in his tent and that begins the strat of their long love affair. Although Ennis is engaged to be married, so when their hearding jod is done they go back to the way their lives were before they met. Ennis gets married to Alma and they have two daughters. Jack marries Lureen a rodeo queen who is also the daughter of a wealthy farm equipment dealer.The two men meet up every summer on Brokeback Mountain and continue their affair for over 20 years.

Answer: At first they were just wrestling and horsing around. However, underlying tensions and frustrations over their impossible situation, and Ennis' reluctance to commit to Jack, causes their anger (particularly Jack's) to overtake them, and it erupts into a full-blown fight.
