William Blake (Johnny Depp), an accountant whose parents have recently died, arrives in the town of Machine. During his first night in town, Blake kills another man in self defense, when Blake is seen in bed with the other man's former girlfriend. The man Blake kills is the son of Machine's Metal Works company president John Dickison (Robert Mitchum). Blake wakes up the next day and meets a Native American known as Nobody (Gary Farmer). We follow William Blake and Nobody as the recently wanted man (and his companion) go on a journey to "the other side." Along the way they meet degenerates, missionaries, sheriffs, destruction, death...
