In Africa, Vitaly (Jared Leto) tries to stop a deal that Yuri (Nicolas Cage) is making with a group of "freedom fighters" (who are going to slaughter a small village) by attempting to destroy two trucks with guns and ammo but he is killed (and Baptiste's son is also killed). Yuri pays a doctor to remove the bullets from Vitaly's body but one bullet is left inside and when the coffin goes through Customs at the airport, Yuri is arrested. Yuri's wife and son leave him and his parents disown him. While in custody, Yuri says to agent Valentine (Ethan Hawke) that he won't be detained for very long because he has connections; that not only does he provide weapons for the enemies of the U.S. but also to the enemies of the enemies of the U.S. and he also mentions that he's a "necessary evil". Yuri is released moments after mentioning this and we briefly see that one of his connections is someone of high rank in the U.S. military. The final scene is Yuri standing in a village with the ground covered in bullets; he says directly at the camera that when the world ends, the only people left alive will be arms dealers because they provide weapons but they don't pick sides. "That's the secret to survival. Never go to war."

Factual error: When Yuri is narrating about selling weapons for the US government (this was around the scene when he sells M-16's by the kilo), he mentions Lieutenant Colonel Southern. However, when you see the him, he has Colonel rank, which is a silver eagle. The Lieutenant Colonel rank is a silver leaf, not an eagle.

Yuri Orlov: [To the ATF agent who has apprehended him because his brother, who died of "natural causes", has a bullet in his body] I don't suppose this is about alcohol or tobacco.

Trivia: While shooting the scenes on the Ukrainan military base, director Andrew Niccol had to inform NATO that he was shooting a movie, and that was what the line-up of tanks was for. Otherwise, NATO might have mistaken it as a mobilisation of a division.
