Question: At the end of the movie, Charles and Carrie decide to spend the rest of their lives together without being married. If Charles loves Carrie so much and wants to spend the rest of his life with her, why doesn't he just marry her?
Answer: I don't recall if it was determined whether or not they eventually married. The end showed them together with their baby and implied that they had married by then.
He specifically asked her not to be his wife.
Continuity mistake: When Charles finally walks through the vestry door to 'face the enemy' his hair changes from rather messy to nicely combed, then to messy again when he walks through the church. (01:40:55)
Charles: Any idea who the girl in the black hat is?
Fiona: The name's Carrie.
Charles: Pretty.
Fiona: American.
Charles: Interesting.
Fiona: Slut.
Charles: Really?
Fiona: Used to work at Vogue. Lives in America now. Only gets out with very glamorous people. Quite out of your league.
Charles: Well, that's a relief. Thanks.
Trivia: In the scene where Charles has run into Henrietta in the hallway after witnessing Bernard and Lydia having their sneaky consummation, Henrietta pulls Charles' head onto her shoulder. Look closely and you can see Hugh Grant's lip get caught quite badly on the fabric.

Answer: Carrie had just gone through a divorce, and Charles had left a woman at the altar. They were both kind of soured on the idea of marriage.
