Paris, 1830. Renowned detective Vidocq (Gerard Depardieu) dies battling against a mysterious masked figure and the country is in shock. A young journalist and Vidocq's biographer, Etienne Boisset, investigates the death of Vidocq. Etienne starts his investigation by talking with Vidocq's partner Nimier and the people involved with Vidocq's last case that led him to his final confrontation with the masked figure. It all started when Vidocq was investigating the case of the "accidental" death of two wealthy men...
