Continuity mistake: Near the end of the race, Hidalgo collapses and there is blood in his nose. Then, when Hidalgo has gotten up and is running full out towards the finish line, there is no blood there at all. In the next shot, there is a pinkish trickle of blood that goes about to Hidalgo's chin.

So Frank Hopkins (Viggo Mortensen) wins the race, but doesn't get the girl. Different. He figures out that he belongs with the Native Americans cause that's the flag he holds up when he wins the race. He buys all the Mustangs and sets them free. Then he lets Hildalgo free and Hildalgo rides off with the heard.
