Factual error: During the scene where Charlie's thug, Lo, is in the street with the homeless man and his "busket", Lo gets angry at him, pulls his Glock out and rakes the slide to chamber a round. However, in the next shots of Lo we see his Glock with the slide still back even though it should have returned to the closed position.

Max and his girl Elise set up a fake kidnapping to make some profit and in turn Elise's brother Avery thinks he's setting up the kidnapping in order to get out of a debt. Max, Avery, Brett, and T.K. then kidnap Carlo Bartolucci(Charlie Barett) a mob boss, and take him to Ira's house. They cut off Charlie's finger and tell him that's what the kidnappers did to Elise, and whatever they do to her, they'll do to him, so by him paying the randsom to Elise's kidnapping he'll get to save himself.

Answer: I found a google hit showing it was released as a short story for Cosmopolitan in Aug 1953.
