The film was a passion project for writer/director/star Mark Fischbach. Fischbach is a popular YouTuber who goes by the name "Markiplier" and was an enormous fan of the original video game. He financed the movie with his team and made it independently with assistance from the creators of the game. It was originally going to be a limited release, but the project and Fischbach's popularity caused interest to soar, and he was able to secure a wide domestic and international release.
