The Dark Knight (2008)

Question: Why does the Joker keep licking his lips? Is it just a tick he has?

Answer: According to interviews, Heath Ledger started doing that because of the makeup on his face, and director Chris Nolan liked it so much, he told him to keep doing it. He felt that it made the Joker even more bizarre. So yes, it's just a tic.

Saw V (2008)

Question: This movie baffled me, so can someone please provide me with answers to the following questions? 1) Was the detective in on this game from the very beginning of the Saw movies? 2) I thought Jigsaw died in the fourth installment, how did he survive that? 3) Was the last trap set for the detective designed because he knew he would put the other detective in the box, thus saving his life, but he was to get crushed to death? I just didn't get the ending.

Answer: 1. Yes, it is implied that the detective comitted a murder based on Jigsaw from the very beginning, knowing it would be blamed on Jigsaw. 2. He didn't survive. In part 5, we are seeing flashbacks. 3. Hoffman knew that the other detective would not be able to control himself, and that he himself would wind up in the box, and thus be saved while the other detective got crushed.

Inspector Gadget (1999)

Question: When Inspector Gadget is lying on the table with the Claw watching over him, Gadget says that Claw will never get away with this. Then Claw says, "I think someone's been watching too many Saturday morning cartoons", and then everyone looks up at the camera confused/surprised. Can any one explain what the joke is here?

Answer: The joke is that he is referring to the "Inspector Gadget" cartoon, in which the Claw never got away with any of his schemes.

Saw IV (2007)

Question: I don't understand the flow of the film at all; at the beginning, Jigsaw's dead body is in the autopsy room and Hoffman is present. Yet at the end of the film, Strahm has only just discovered Jigsaw's body in the position he died in in the third film. Consequently, I don't see how the beginning of the fifth film makes much sense either. Help?

Answer: The events of Saw III and Saw IV are actually happening at the same time.

wizard_of_gore

Answer: It is because of the plot twist at the end, where we find out that Saw III and Saw IV take place simultaneously.

Question: I apologize for my original question, that is currently listed on MM, I was mistaken as to where in the film my question refers to, so please delete that question. That said, can someone answer this, please. Right before the lamp breaks, and right after Ralphie's mom fills her watering can in the sink, it really sounds like the "old man" yells, "You platypus nut-grabber". Is that what he's saying? I realize most of his "swearing" is actually nonsensical words and rants.

Answer: You are quite right about this. At one point, he does say "platypus nut-grabber." If you listen closely, you can hear it amongst all the ranting and raving.

Hostel: Part II (2007)

Question: The original Hostel film had 3 different prices (can't remember them exactly but it was one price for local, slightly more expensive for Asian and very expensive for American). However this film sends pictures to clients' phones and starts an auction. Anyone know why this one is different when it's supposed to be the same operation?

Answer: Since the events of the first film, there were some changes in the operation....enhanced security, etc. It can be presumed that the auction is simply one of those changes.

Saw V (2008)

Question: How does Hoffman manage to get out of the glass box after Strahm is crushed to death?

Answer: Obviously, he must have it set up so that he can escape. In Saw VI the walls open and he is able to escape easily.

wizard_of_gore

Answer: It shows in the next movie the box slides into the next room with a conveyer belt.

Yes. The problem with the franchise is that you need to keep watching to get answers.

Ssiscool

Answer: When the room fully shuts, the coffin is transported to another room, where Hoffman can exit the coffin.

General questions

A movie question. I thought that when a movie goes straight to DVD/video/Blue Ray instead of being shown in theaters first, it's because critics gave it very bad reviews. However, there are some movies that continue to have several sequels coming out on DVD, such as the Beethoven dog movies and the Bring It On movies. Why do movie companies continue to produce them when the previous two or three sequels didn't make it to the theaters?

Answer: Because it costs a lot less money to send it direct to video than to release it into theatres. There are high distribution costs associated with a theatrical release. A great many movies make more money on their DVD release than on their theatrical run. In the end, it's all about profit.

General questions

I am looking for the title of a made for TV movie (Lifetime) which Tina Yothers was in. I remember that she was tried out for a cheerleading squad and did not make it but she told her parents that she did. She actually was like the assistant or something. But then her parents came to her school to see her cheer and the whole squad locks one of the mean cheerleaders in a closet so that she can cheer for that game. Does this sound familiar? I remember a small scene when the squad was taking a group picture and they all had on white uniforms and the mean cheerleader shows up in her red uniform so that she could stand out in the picture.

Answer: The movie is "Laker Girls" from 1990.

The Mummy Returns (2001)

Question: There are two scenes in this movie where a man almost gets hit, first by a knife in the O'Connell's home, and the other in the museum, where he is shot at by a shot gun. In both scenes it's the same man, and he gives a kind of smug look before diving out the way to let someone else get hit. Any significance in this actor always surviving?

Answer: Seeing as people almost get killed in just about every action movie, it's highly unlikely that there is any special siginificance to it here.

wizard_of_gore

Answer: It's a gimmick. Towards the end, Jonathan ends up doing the same thing to the same guy when the Pygmies stab him with a spear.

Question: Although some of Bruce Banner's blood falls into one of the soda bottles when he's working in the factory, the movie never explains what happens to that specific bottle. Can we assume that it gets exported to the United States and someone eventually drinks it? Will this tie into the plot for the sequel?

Answer: This is explained in the movie, and it's where Stan Lee's cameo comes in. He is the person who drinks the contaminated soda, triggering a "gamma sickness" incident.

Waterworld (1995)

Question: Where did the bad guys get the cigarettes, paper, beer, gasoline, and water. All of the guys said they've never seen land, so how did they get this stuff?

Answer: Sealed stuff floats. They gather stuff just like the mariner.

Answer: Well the Black Death cigarettes and the smeat cans were both sealed items so they theoretically were waterproof. The gasoline was refined from oil which was leftover in the Exxon Valdez and the water was purified from sources? Just like how the mariner purifies his pee. I mean if you can believe he can purify his pee on the trimaran then I'm sure the crew of the Valdez is capable of purification.

Answer: These points have been brought up ever since this movie came out. I guess you have to suspend a lot of disbelief!

Question: Does Chip really have as many siblings as there are cups in the kitchen? Seems a bit too many, and also they aren't seen as real children at the end of the movie.

Answer: The servants in the castle are transformed into enchanted objects because of the spell, but there are still plenty of other objects in the castle which were not originally people.

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)

Question: I've seen this movie many times, however I noticed something different when I was it on TV in the UK recently. In the cargo hold, Riggs is dodging in and out of cover behind shipping containers and shooting bad guys. In the TV version I saw, as Riggs breaks his cover and walks forward shooting we hear a voice-over from Riggs, repeating the names of those victims killed by the South Africans ending with Rika and Vicki. I have never noticed this before in any of the DVD / VHS releases. I checked my DVD and no voice-over. Am I going mad?

Answer: Prior to the 2010 Blu-Ray release; this scene was always heavily edited in the UK (in both the theatrical and all home video releases - including so the 'Director's Cut') thanks to the BBFC, to remove a lot of the violence. The voice over was still there but severely truncated as the corresponding footage had been removed. Some TV airings from 2000 onwards however used the original 'uncut' (i.e. No BBFC cuts) versions, which featured the violent footage and voice over in full. It's possible the version you saw on TV was the uncut version, while your VHS and DVD copies were the cut versions. Another indicator of which version you were watching is the scene right after Riggs emerges from the water having freed himself from his straitjacket and discovered Rika's body. If this scene was followed by Riggs climbing aboard the dock and taking out 2 South Africans in a violent rampage, you were watching the uncut version. If it cut straight to Riggs on the dock, 're-locating' his shoulder on the car (with noticeable soundtrack skip) ; you were watching the cut BBFC version.

General questions

I'm looking for this movie I saw when I was a kid, it's possibly made in the 80's, maybe even earlier. In the beginning, this kid who is home alone is on the phone with his friend and he hears something in his house that distracts him. So he puts the phone down to go look and there's this miniature red car in his living room along with this machine thing. He gets in and starts looking in the car and it had these tokens that he was supposed to put in the machine, which he does and he somehow goes through this portal in which I'm pretty sure he turns into an animation and has this whole adventure as a cartoon boy, which I can't remember any part of. Anyway, in the end he comes back and his friend is still on hold. He picks up the phone and starts to tell his friend about this long adventure and the friend is confused and says that he's only been on hold for a couple seconds, or something to that affect. Any info will help, nobody I've told has heard of this and thinks I'm crazy. Thanks.

Answer: It sounds very much like "The Phantom Tollbooth" which was made in 1970, starring Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster).

General questions

I am looking for the name of a made-for-TV movie that started with the words "The Rape of ___", about a police detective who has a very cavalier attitude about rape until he is cornered in a basement by two criminals (and is without backup) and is taunted and raped by these men. The movie deals with his emotional/psychological problems as a result of his ordeal. The actor that played the lead role should have received an award, but I don't think he did and have never seen the movie again.

Answer: The movie is "The Rape of Richard Beck" starring Richard Crenna, from 1985.

Question: At the jazz club, after Peter dances with Gwen, Gwen is upset and asks "That was all for her?" when she realizes that Peter was only dancing with her to bother Mary Jane. However, isn't Gwen still Eddie Brock's girlfriend?

Answer: Not really. They only went out for coffee once. In Eddie's mind however, Gwen is his girlfriend.
