Continuity mistake: When Frodo finally sees Bilbo in Rivendell he opens the Red Book and reads the title page, "There and Back Again..." The handwriting on the page in this close-up is different than when it is first seen at the start of the film, when Bilbo first writes it. (01:25:15)

Continuity mistake: Frodo is in the boat and Sam yells out, "And I'm coming with you!" in the far wide shot, Frodo is not holding the oar in his hands, as he does in the close-up shot before and after. (01:30:20)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: After Frodo rescues a drowning Sam and Sam declares that he made a promise not to leave Frodo, they embrace. In the first two close-ups, Frodo is clutching Sam's shoulder with his right hand, and his right arm doesn't go all the way around Sam's back. In the far wide shot, Frodo's arms go over Sam's shoulder and reach all the way around Sam's back in a tight hug. In the very next close-up, they are in the exact same positions as in the previous close-up. Since these are successive shots, the excuse can not be made that in the wide shot, Frodo put his arm around Sam differently. (01:31:40)

Revealing mistake: When Boromir dies, Legolas and Gimli are standing nearby. This shot of Gimli's face and beard are very different here, because they changed Gimli's appearance after this. Most things were shot out of sequence. Compare his face in this shot to when they're fighting the Uruk-hai or when Gimli, Aragorn and Legolas are by the shore and decide to "hunt some Orc." (01:28:10)

Continuity mistake: After leaving the Mines of Moria, the Fellowship flee toward Lothlorien. Aragorn runs through a rocky bed of water, stops and smiles looking ahead. In the shot from the front, the top of his bow is hardly seen at his shoulder, but in the shot from behind the top of the bow is way up higher than his shoulder. (00:44:00)

Continuity mistake: Haldir, Aragorn and Legolas are standing looking out in this front close-up shot, as Haldir says, "Caras Galadhon." In the next wide shot from behind, as Haldir's voice is heard saying, "The heart of Elvendom on earth," it is blatantly obvious that it is Morgan Evans's (O. Bloom's double) profile near Haldir - note his height and cheek/jaw line. (00:47:25)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: On their way to the Falls of Rauros, the Fellowship rest at night on the shore. The three boats are side by side at the shoreline, in the first shot. Then we see the boats near the rockface beside the sleeping Hobbits, and next to Frodo and Sam when they're speaking. (01:08:45)

Trivia: When Legolas is on the Troll, only some shots of the lower part of his body are CG, the rest of him is real. Whereas, when Merry and Pippin are seen on the Troll, they are entirely CG. Commentaries, extended DVD. (00:30:55 - 00:32:30)

Trivia: When running away from the Balrog, Boromir is the first to reach the bottomless stairs and Legolas pulls him back to safety. When this piece was shot, there were many retakes, and each time Sean Bean would get pulled back by Orlando Bloom, Bean would land back onto Bloom's soft lap, while Bloom would slam back onto the hard steps with the full weight of the two of them. As a result, Bloom had bruising on his backside and legs, for some time. Bloom joked, "I gave Sean a few beatings for that, I can tell ya." Cast commentary, extended DVD. (00:36:40)

Continuity mistake: The hand of Saruman that is painted on the face of Lurtz is shaped differently in some scenes. The handprint changes throughout these shots. (01:08:00 - 01:25:50)

Super Grover

Trivia: Parts of the Rivendell scenes were shot as pickups, after filming was done. Sam in those shots is a much thinner hobbit, because after the final wrap, Sean Astin lost the weight he had gained to play Samwise Gamgee. (01:28:45)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: Just before Frodo is stabbed by the Troll, 2 buttons are closed on his vest. When he's stabbed, 1 button is closed. When Aragorn rolls him over, after being stabbed, he has an open vest. It remains open until being surrounded by the Orcs in the great hall. Gandalf says, "This foe is beyond any of you. Run!" and Frodo's scale double has his vest fully buttoned. Just after Gandalf yells to Aragorn, "Swords are of no more use here," Frodo has only 2 buttons closed. Then as the stairs are collapsing under Frodo and Aragorn's feet, his vest is mostly buttoned again. (00:32:10 - 00:38:25)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: The Troll hasn't even entered the doorway yet, and both Sam and Aragorn look way up, as if the Troll were standing right in front of them already, but the Troll is only visible more in the distance, through the door. Since the Troll is still only in the doorway for them to see, the eye angle should still be towards the doorway, not up over them. Then when the Troll smashes through the doorway, and walks towards Sam, in the same shot as earlier, Sam looks way up at the Troll, but this time the eye angle is correct. (00:29:35)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When Boromir attacks him, Frodo frantically slips the Ring onto his middle finger (with the chain). Yet, as Frodo runs up the steps of the ruins, Boromir yells, "Frodo, I'm sorry!" and Frodo wears the Ring on his index finger. He is terrified, so as to remain invisible he does not change fingers. (01:15:30 - 01:16:35)

Super Grover

Trivia: When the Ring speaks to Aragorn, the subtitles say, "Aragorn, Aragorn, Elessar." However, when listening to the words spoken, it sounds like the Ring says, "Aragorn, Aragorn, bless us." Even on the audio commentary, Elijah Wood (Frodo) says, "I love that the Ring actually speaks to Viggo, as it tempts him, 'bless us', that's amazing, I didn't pick that up until the third time I saw the movie." The other three Hobbit actors (Sean Astin, Dominic Monahan, and Billy Boyd) seemed to concur. (01:17:50)
