Continuity mistake: The Fellowship hide when they spot Crebain from Dunland. In the wide shot when Aragorn picks up his stuff, Frodo runs and lying on the ground under the rocks in front of him are blankets, coats, etc. Then in the next close-up under the rock, the position of those things lying on the ground is different just before Frodo dives onto them to hide. Continuity mistake: At Bag End, Bilbo invites Gandalf in and he hands Bilbo his staff and hat. Before the hand off, the knot of the wrist strap on the staff is seen just as Gandalf says, "Bilbo Baggins." and the rim of his hat is seen throughout. After the hand off, as Bilbo carries the large staff in front of him, the strap hangs down and it's a different knot than seen before. The rim of the huge prop hat is seen when Bilbo puts it down and there is a slice on the rim that was not there before. (00:15:50)

Continuity mistake: Gandalf stands at the door of Bag End waiting for Bilbo. Slung over his shoulder is his large pouch that rests at his thigh, and attached to the large pouch is a small pouch, near the flap. When Gandalf enters Bag End the small pouch is gone, not hidden, just gone. (00:15:35)

Continuity mistake: Gandalf and Frodo ride towards Bag End and in the close-up as Frodo says, "Never had any adventures or did..." they pass the stone wall to his right. In the next wide shot, Gandalf says, "If you're referring to the incident..." and they ride further away from the stone wall, then pass the huge tree on Frodo's right. However in Frodo's next close-up, they're closer to the stone wall and haven't passed the huge tree yet. (00:13:45)

Continuity mistake: At Bag End, Gandalf tosses the envelope with the Ring into the fire. He grips tongs tightly between his thumb and other fingers and reaches into the fire with his thumb facing his left side. In the close-up, the Ring is grasped on the same side as his thumb, with the excess Ring on the other side with his other fingers. Yet in the next shot, Gandalf lifts the Ring out of the fire and the Ring is grasped on the same side as his other fingers, with the excess Ring at the same side as his thumb. This has nothing to do with camera angles. (00:36:55)

Continuity mistake: While Gandalf is nervously waiting, Frodo is looking for the envelope with the Ring in the wood chest. In the first shot looking up from the POV of the chest, Frodo holds the envelope with the flap up near his fingers and the seal below it. However in the next shot the envelope is reversed, with the flap opposite his fingers. (00:36:40)

Continuity mistake: Frodo enters a dark Bag End and Gandalf grabs Frodo's shoulder. In the next shot Frodo spins around and Gandalf removes his hand. However in the last shot facing Gandalf, Gandalf still has his hand on Frodo's shoulder. (00:36:30)

Continuity mistake: The Watcher in the Water holds Frodo upside down, and just as its head comes out of the water, but before its mouth appears, in this shot part of the back of Frodo's cloak is tucked into his belt at the back of his waist. Continuity mistake: Boromir gets hit by Lurtz's second arrow, drops down to his knees in front of Merry and Pippin, gathers strength, turns around and stabs an Uruk. In the next wide shot and close-up, he stands and is about to stab an Uruk in the back and the two arrows in his chest are there. Yet, in the next wide shot, as his blade is going down into the Uruk, Boromir has only the lower arrow in him, the one near his shoulder is not there, for 23 frames. In the next close-up, the upper arrow is back. These arrows are not CGI. (01:23:40)

Continuity mistake: Gandalf and Bilbo sit on the bench outside of Bag End smoking and in the distance is the Party Tree, the tents and party lights, etc. from Bilbo's party. During the party, Bilbo is speaking with the lights above him and the position of various tents are shown during the entire celebration. Later, invisible Bilbo comes to the gate at Bag End and the Party Tree with all the tents surrounding it are seen (minus the tent that the rocket took and the tent that the 'dragon' burned). The position and arrangement of some tents, lights, etc. are different in all of these shots. (00:19:25)

Continuity mistake: In the opening shot of Bag End, as Bilbo says, "The Third Age of this world," we see the halls outside of Bilbo's study as Bilbo writes. There is a dresser with books on it, books lying near the coat tree, stacks of books and papers all over the floor and against the walls. Later, just before Bilbo says, "Frodo, someone at the door," and then when Bilbo searches for the Ring in the hall, in all three of these shots, the arrangement or even existence of quite a few of those books and papers is different. This has nothing to do with his search of the Ring. (00:08:00 - 00:12:50)

Continuity mistake: Gandalf and Frodo ride towards Bag End. 1st, Frodo says, "Half the Shire's been invited," the scarf is hanging on the lantern. 2nd, Bilbo in voice over says, "Life in the Shire goes on..." riding over the bridge, there is no scarf on the lantern. 3rd, Bilbo continues, "But things are made to endure in the Shire," there is a scarf hanging on the lantern. 4th, as Bilbo continues saying, "Passing from one generation to the next," the scarf is not on the lantern. 5th, Gandalf says, "If you're referring to the incident..." there is a scarf on the lantern once again. 6th, coming up the hill, as he pulls up to Bag End, there is no scarf on the lantern, yet again. Continuity mistake: At Amon Hen, Merry and Pippin run from the Uruk-hai after distracting them from Frodo's escape. After they run over the bridge, the next shot is of the two of them stopping short when Merry sees more oncoming Uruk-hai. In this shot it is only Pippin's Elven brooch that is facing the opposite way it normally faces. (01:20:55)

Continuity mistake: At Dwarrowdelf, when Gimli runs into the Chamber of Mazarbul with Balin's Tomb, once inside seen to his left is a big stone with corpses and armor on and around it. When they hear the Orcs, Boromir runs to the door and we see the same big stone again. That stone and some of the corpses are positioned very differently in both of these shots. Continuity mistake: At Dwarrowdelf, as Gimli runs into the Chamber of Mazarbul toward Balin's Tomb, just past the doorway we see a long stick and a very short axe leaning on the right wall. Later when Legolas says, "Orcs!" Boromir runs to the door and now we see a long handle axe with the big blade on top, leaning on that same wall. This does not refer to the two axes in the corner. Continuity mistake: Boromir approaches the statue that holds the shards of Narsil. First we see the shards laid out on the crinkled grey cloth, with two short ends draped over the edge. Then as he takes the hilt the cloth bunches up (seen on fullscreen), and he cuts his finger on the 'still sharp' blade. In the close-up when he carelessly places the hilt back onto the cloth - as it starts to fall, the cloth (which is now darker) is spread out much straighter, more cloth drapes over the left edge, and the shards are spaced somewhat differently than the previous shot. When Boromir walks away, there is a very short amount of cloth that is draped over the right edge, near the statue's fingers. Then, when Aragorn lifts the hilt off the floor, as he rises, both ends of the cloth that are draped over the edge are now much, much, longer, and the top of the cloth is crinkled, with the shards spaced similarly to the first shot. Continuity mistake: When Gandalf says, "Mellon," the doors to Moria open and they all go in. Legolas soon picks up an arrow and says, "Goblins!" When he does so, we see the left long braid is loose at the end and coming undone. After Boromir shouts, "Legolas!" in the close-up we see the perfectly made long braid hanging down. (00:16:55)

Continuity mistake: At Balin's Tomb, after Gimli kneels and cries, "Oh no! No!" there is an overhead shot of the room. In this shot we see the papers littering the floor around the tombstone. Next we see an extreme close-up of the tombstone, with the skeletal head to its left and the absence of papers around it. Then, in a close-up of the skeleton holding the book, we see papers again, but they are lying about differently than in the overhead shot. Then in the next shot as Gandalf hands Pippin his hat and staff, the papers are the same again, as in the previous overhead shot. (00:25:20)

Continuity mistake: As Gimli runs into the room of Balin's Tomb, he stops and says, "No!" and in this wide shot, the huge stone with skeletal remains on and around it is lying away from the wall, just behind Gimli, to his left. He kneels, and after he cries, "Oh no! No!" there is a wide overhead shot of the room. In this shot, that particular stone with the skeletal remains is right next to the corner of the wall now. This doesn't have anything to do with camera angle. (00:25:10)

Continuity mistake: At Dwarrowdelf, as Gimli runs towards the Chamber of Mazarbul with Balin's Tomb, we see outside the doorway an assortment of body remains, armor and other objects. Then after hearing the approaching Orcs, Boromir looks out of the doorway, and we see to his left that the various body remains and armor are different. When Aragorn and Boromir close the doors to the room, outside we see the position and/or variety of body remains, armor and objects change again. (00:25:05)
