General questions

I'm trying to remember the title of a movie I rented a few years ago. I don't remember what year it was made but I'm pretty sure it wasn't an old movie, it was probably after 1990. The concept of the movie is there's this guy, the main character, who wakes up one day and finds that everyone on earth has dropped dead. Except, he finds one woman and one other man alive, but that's it. It's just the three of them. The plot of the movie is basically the main character finds the woman and since they think they're the only 2 people left of earth, they figure they have to repopulate the earth. But, then the other guy comes along, who is better looking and more cool than the main guy. I'd really like to find out what the title of the movie was. Hopefully, someone knows. Thanks.

Answer: That sounds like The Quiet Earth (1985).

Why, in almost any war movie (from Saving Private Ryan to Starship Troopers), do soldiers keep hitting their helmets with their ammo clips before they insert them? Is it for good luck, or does it have something to do with avoiding jamming?

Answer: It makes sure all the rounds in a magazine are properly seated to reduce the chances of jamming. And if you are wondering, soldiers really do it and it really does help.

General questions

A common scene in action movies is a bad guy getting shot with a pistol, and flying backwards ten feet. I know this defies Newton's third law, "With every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." If the victim flies ten metres, the shooter would also be propelled ten metres. My question is, what would it take to create a handgun that is capable of flinging the shooter ten metres? Like, if the manafacturer had access to any thearetical alloy, of any strength and density, what would it take? How heavy would a bullet have to be, etc.?

Answer: You've answered your own question. It's NOT possible without violating the laws of physics. You'd need some super-futuristic device that stored kinetic energy in the bullet and then released it on impact or a weapon that manipulated gravity. Needless to say, you ain't gonna see it in your lifetime!

I remember seeing a movie and I think it was by Stephen King, I'm not sure though. It was about these aliens and things turned green randomly in the movie. I remember this kid doing a magic show and under his table was a foot peddle that turned green. I also remember some kind of barn thing in some ones back yard where the aliens captured people and held them there and there was a green glow in and out of it. I think I remember these people at a store and one goes up to a vending machine and vaporizes. Please tell me what movie this is.

Answer: The Tommyknockers.

General questions

I remember watching a movie, I don't quite remember when that was but it was about a little boy who wishes he would become older really fast. So he wakes up in the morning as an adult. His mum kicks him out for thinking he was someone else and he does this secret handshake with his friend so the friend will believe him. He and his friend do lots of fun things together. Could anyone tell me which movie this was? Thanks.

Answer: "Big" starring Tom Hanks.

I saw on TV a long time ago (early 1980's) a scene where lobsters were crawling out of everyone's drains and chasing people. It was live action, not animated, but I don't know if this was a TV show or a movie. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Krista

Chosen answer: I believe this was a commercial for the Nickelodeon network.

I remember seeing a film as a girl and remember only one scene where a woman is at a party and is hiding or sneaking around, and by accident gets her dress shredded by standing above the shredder. Does anyone know what film I'm talking about?

There was this cartoon (I think?) series in the 80's (maybe late) in the US that had one girl and two boys searching for lands of gold. The only other thing I remember is that one of the boys had a vase/pot that had broken lines on it that glowed for some reason. Any ideas?

shortdanzr

Chosen answer: Sounds like "The Mysterious Cities of Gold". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122356/.

General questions

This applies to many, many action/spy movies. Silenced pistols in movies are pretty much silent, but I have read that this is not the case in real life and although a silencer does quieten a gunshot, it's still not exactly silent. My question is, does a real life silenced pistol still have a similar sound to movie silenced pistols (that sort of high pitched "ping" or "pew" sound), only louder, or is it an entirely different noise?

Gary O'Reilly

Chosen answer: It depends. You CANNOT silence a revolver. A silencer on an average pistol will only make the shot about half as loud as normal. It will not make the pistol go "pfft" like in the movies. However, there are some specifically designed weapons, such as the MP5 SD3 (as seen in Navy Seals), the S&W 9mm "Hush Puppy", the British Welrod and the Chinese Type 64, that are almost completely silent, the only noise being the muted clack of the bolt.

General questions

I recall seeing a movie as a child that scared the Dickens out of me. It was probably the early seventies, and it involved a lot of scenes where people were walking in grassy fields and every few hundred yards were large holes in the ground leading down to a network of tunnels where monsters lurked. It was supposedly set in the future. The premise was similar to the Sleestacks (?) from Land of the Lost, however, it was a theatrical release originally and was fairly well done. Does anyone have a clue as to what movie this is?

Answer: Sounds like the original Time Machine. The holes led to the realm of the Morlocks.

General questions

I'm looking for the title of a film I once saw, a few years ago. I can only remember a couple of scenes/details from it though. All I remember is that the main character is on the run from the police. In one scene, he is racing down a street in a truck and he crashes into a baby's pram. He is mortified, thinking he's killed a baby, but in fact it turns out that all that was in the pram was cans of beer. The only other scene I can remember is a scene where he goes into a shop, and the shopkeeper agrees to hide him from the police. When a female officer enters the shop and asks the shopkeeper if he has seen the main guy, the shopkeeper says no and then makes some comment about why female police officers aren't called 'officeresses' (the shopkeeper guy is quite a creepy character). That's all I can remember of the film I'm afraid, other than the fact the main guy ends up pretty badly battered at the end of the film. It's not much to go on I know, but if anyone could tell me what film this is I'd be really grateful. Thanks.

The Doctor

Chosen answer: That is Falling Down with Micheal Douglas and Robert Duvall.

I am trying to remember a film I saw on Sky 1 a few years ago. It dealt with a cop or ex-cop or somebody of that sort, and an evil guy with a very bad blonde mullet. The only scenes I remember are as follows: there is a small blonde girl standing over a well with a barb wire crank running across it, and the evil guy tells the girl to hold the wire and she her hand starts to bleed as one of his minions cranks the wire; then she looks into the camera; the other is where the guy, he has dark short hair and is crucified on something. He is bloody throughout most of the movie, but for the life of me I can't remember its name.

Answer: Cyborg with Jean-Claude van Damme.

What was the title of a movie where the lead character picks up a rather nervous looking man with a duffel bag? During the conversation that follows, the nervous guy says that he's invented his million dollar idea. It's six minute abs. The lead character replies that it sounds great, but what happens to his market if someone invents five minute abs. At which point the nervous guy gets completely thrown off track. I think in the next scene they pull over and the nervous guy gets out of the car because there's a cop nearby but leaves his duffel bag.

Some years ago I watched a film, now I know this sounds strange, but some Electricity Pylons sort of came to life and started walking on a mission. The story seemed to revolve round a little boy if my memory serves me right. Does anyone know what the film was?

Jon Sandys

Chosen answer: Sounds a lot like The Iron Giant.
