Groundhog Day

Factual error: The sun is up when the alarm clock goes off at 6AM. On that latitude, in early February, it'd be dark outside.

Suggested correction: On that latitude on the 2nd of February it will be what they call "Nautical twilight" at 6AM. That isn't dark, but quite light already. As you can see in the movie, it's correct. The movie was shot in Illinois, which is about the same latitude.

For Punxsutawney on February 2nd, "Nautical Twilight" is from 6:23am to 6:56am, and "Astronomical Twilight" is from 5:51am to 6:23am (sunrise is 7:25am), so at 6am there would be just a hint of slight brightening in the sky, and no usable light hitting the ground. Nothing like what Phil sees outside his window. That said, the amount of light shown is a necessary artistic change for the plot of the movie so while technically incorrect, I don't really consider a "mistake."

Deliberate mistake: When Phil wakes up at 6 AM, it's already bright outside. At 6 AM in February, it would still be pitch-dark. This was done intentionally by the director for the sake of the viewer, but still makes no sense.

Visible crew/equipment: When Bill Murray first meets Ned Ryerson, there is a reflection of the film crew very briefly in the shop window behind them.

Trivia: I'm not sure if this was done intentionally, but in the scene where Phil is eating a table full of sweets, talking to Rita, as the camera pans in on Phil, there are 2 clocks on his immediate left. Both look like they indicate the same time, but one says 5:55, and one says 11:30. Notice that the angle of each hand is the same, but the little and big hands are switched. Neat trick if it was done on purpose.

Question: Toward the beginning of the movie, on Phil's first day at the bed and breakfast, he turns on the shower and it is very cold. He asks the lady in the hallway why there is no hot water. The lady answers "Oh no, there wouldn't be any today." Why not?

Chosen answer: Likely because there are a lot of people staying there and using up the hot water.

Question: When Phil and the two locals are driving on the railroad tracks, they are closely followed by a police unit. Phil drives off the tracks at a crossing where the tracks became level with the street surface. How did the police car get out from in front of the train?

scwilliam

Chosen answer: It was never explained in the film but there could be two possible explanations. One is the police car never got off the tracks in time and was hit by the train. Another is the car managed to get off the tracks in time despite the difficulty of getting off a railroad track so quickly. Up to the viewer to decide.

Gavin Jackson

Answer: We know the police car survived because unit 2 is the car that followed them onto the tracks, and unit 2 is also one of the cars present when they are stopped (though it came from the wrong direction). The movie doesn't explain how the car survived so it is left to the viewer's imagination.

Question: When Phil Connors is playing the piano with the jazz group, his piano teacher excitedly tells Rita that he is her pupil. Why has he has a piano lesson that day, when he obviously learnt to play brilliantly in previous days?

Chosen answer: He has been doing the same routine for who knows how many "days", that is would not be unusual that he would have a lesson that day - no matter how well he played.
