In America

Factual error: The movie takes place in New York City, yet a sign on the ice cream store where the mother works says "Take Away." I know they call it "take away" in Britain and Ireland, but in New York it is called "take out." The movie was filmed in New York and Ireland, so that shot was probably filmed in Ireland. (00:09:45)

Continuity mistake: When the pregnant Sarah watches the girls trick-or-treating Mateo there's a shot of her belly where she looks like she's almost due, but in later scenes it's much smaller, especially when she tries to keep Johnny from leaving the apartment and holds her hand against her absolutely flat belly. Continuity mistake: In the scene where Johnny wins the E.T. doll the onlookers keep moving between shots. First Sarah moves from the counter behind her daughters, and later the crowd are either standing still and staring at Johnny or moving and talking to each other in alternating shots. Trivia: Samantha Morton plays Sarah Sullivan, the mother of Christy Sullivan (Sarah Bolger). In real life, Morton is only fourteen years older than Bolger .

Johnny: Are you in love with her?
Mateo: No... I'm in love with you. And I'm in love with your beautiful woman. And I'm in love with your kids. And I'm even in love with your unborn child. I'm even in love with your anger! I'm in love with anything that lives.

Johnny: Do you want me to lie?
Sarah: You're the only actor in the world who can't lie, Johnny. Even for the sake of your kids.
Johnny: What does that mean?
Sarah: If you can't touch somebody you created, how can you create somebody that'll touch anybody?
Johnny: What are you going on about?
Sarah: Acting, Johnny. And bringing something to life, it's the same thing. That's why you can't get a job acting, Johnny, because you can't feel anything.
Johnny: This baby's not Frankie, Sarah.

Mateo: What was Frankie like?
Johnny: A warrior.
Mateo: Maselu masela.
Johnny: What does that mean?
Mateo: A warrior who is not afraid to go to the other side.
Johnny: The other side of what?
