I used to own this game on the N64 (before my games were all stolen)

Super Mario Kart was my very first racing game, and my love of that was only solidified once I got Mario Kart 64. I love love love this game. And it often jockeys back and forth between this and Super to which is my favorite Kart racer. So I usually group them together as my favorite.

Mario Kart 64 took Super, and expanded it to 3D for the N64, and tried to improve on the original in many ways. It also has my boy Wario in the game and who I would up playing the most, and this game is why he's my favorite Mario character. I even voice him in Hyper Frost Production projects, and in our up and coming Game Over Cafe show we have in pre-production.
I could probably say that I like Mario Kart 64 just a tad better than Super, and I know I've put way way more hours into 64. Hell I've put thousands upon thousands of hours into my N64 over the years with the various games but Mario Kart 64 was always one I came back to.
Despite poor imitators like Diddy Kong Racing, which I also had and 100% every thing in, Mario Kart 64 is a one of a kind experience that has not been successfully replicated since, even in it's own franchise.

This was the high point of the Mario Kart franchise, and it only went down hill from there starting with Double Dash, which had it's charms and was still good but started getting into some of the flaws of modern Mario Kart. Which has become pretty much no skill, item spam, communist racing rules that babies the players and tries to make everybody fair.
Mario Kart 64 still took skill, still took technique and was just a blast.

I wish Nintendo would take Mario Kart back to this more simple basic design and less item spam.
Make Mario Kart Great Again lol.

Mistake status: I have one, I don't remember submitting. I may revisit it for mistakes at some point.

10/10. One of my favorite Nintendo 64 games. The characters are great, my favorite being Luigi. The courses, the items, the music, all perfect. This came out during the Golden Age of Nintendo, back when they cared about the quality of games and the players having fun. It's great and a success.

Bug: A rather infamous shortcut glitch is in Wario Stadium, where the very first hill after the starting line is high enough that if you hit it at an angle you can completely jump over the wall. This cuts off a significant portion of the track, putting the player way ahead. Then on top of that, if you turn around and hit a part of the wall just right at a good angle, it will cause you to jump back over the wall before the finish line, cutting off the full track. Do it right, and you can complete the full three laps in under 30 seconds.

Trivia: In Bowser's Castle, there is a Thwomp locked behind bars, and if you bump the bars he will make a face and laugh at you. The laugh used is actually the same laugh from Wario but slightly slowed and pitched down. Rumours about this Thwomp circulated around playgrounds for years and players nicknamed him Marty. Developers even gave a nod to him in later Mario Kart games reusing the laugh. And Marty has also become the subject of several creepypastas.
