The Great Gatsby

Question: In the scene where Gatsby is telling Nick his origin story, Nick narrates that Cody (a man he saved and sailed the ocean with) died and he was cheated out of his inheritance by Cody's family and he was once again dirt poor. After this part has been narrated, a clip of spinning newspapers is shown of what happens to Gatsby after this. As this happens, if you listen in the background, you'll notice that there is a song beginning to play. What is this song that is playing? (01:09:40)

Chosen answer: The song is "Back to Black" by Beyoncé (Feat. Andre 3000).

Question: What sort of accent is Gatsby supposed to have? (00:29:55)

Chosen answer: This has been answered before. Gatsby grew up in a poor, mid-western family. He is a self-made millionaire (through illegal means) but pretends he comes from wealthy, upper-class society. He has adopted a fake posh accent to help support the illusion of his bogus background. It is how he believes well-bred people speak.

Question: In the apartment scene where Nick is sitting awkwardly listening to Tom and Myrtle "do it", what is the dog eating on the plate? Because, at one point, the plate is empty and then you hear a plopping noise and there is more (food?) on the plate. What is it?

Answer: According to the script, it's a "soggy dog biscuit [dissolving] into a saucer of milk".

Continuity mistake: As Gatsby and Nick overtake a truck on a bend, he swerves in front of the truck to avoid an oncoming car. In the very next shot, he is not in front of the truck, nor is there an oncoming car. (00:36:30)

Trivia: The shot of Gatsby floating on the pool with the cops and journalists sneaking in is an obvious tribute to an exact shot from Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard.
