It is 1815 and Jean Valjean just got out on parole from a long prison stretch. He resorts to stealing from a kindly bishop even though the man fed him and gave him a place to sleep. He is caught and sent back to face the bishop but is surprised when he backed up his alibi and urged him to use the stolen silver to build a new life for himself. Valjean is so moved by this charity that he swears to change his ways.
Trivia: Anne Hathaway won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role as Fantine, even though she only had 15 minutes of screen time.
