The People in Charge (P.I.C.) raid the King's demonstration of separating his soul from his body and arrest a bunch of people. Kneller (Tom Waits) is really an agent of the People in Charge. Mikal (Shannyn Sossamon) goes with the P.I.C., has her case reviewed since she accidentally overdosed (didn't intentionally kill herself) and she's allowed to go back. Eugene and Nanuk leave together to Nanuk's home. After hearing that Mikal will go back to life, Zia (Patrick Fugit) stops waiting for her and drives away in Eugene's car. He goes in the black hole under one of the car seats. Kneller takes Zia's file and pulls a few strings so that he can go back to being alive. Zia, alive again, wakes up in a hospital and next to Mikal. They both smile at each other.
