Trivia: Trail of the Pink Panther was made by editing together deleted scenes and outtakes from five previous Pink Panther films and is widely regarded as a tasteless attempt to cash in on Peter Sellers' death. Sellers' widow, Lynn Frederick, sued MGM, United Artists, and director Blake Edwards, accusing them of tarnishing her late husband's reputation and seeking to have the film banned. She was awarded US$1,000,000 in damages, but her application to have the film banned was dismissed.
Trivia: Actor David Niven was, in fact, terminally ill with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) when he appeared in both "Trail of the Pink Panther" and "Curse of the Pink Panther" before his death in 1983. Niven's illness was so debilitating that his voice often completely failed him while filming, such that it was necessary to hire celebrity impressionist Rich Little to overdub Niven's voice in both films.
Trivia: Although Richard Mulligan plays Clouseau's father in this film, he was seven years younger than Peter Sellers.
