Factual error: When the hurricane hits Lake Okeechobee, there is a lot of lighting and thunder. Lighting occurs rarely during a hurricane. I know, I went through 3 last year in Florida.
Answer: One or the other may simply have been infertile. Some people simply aren't capable of having children, and no medical intervention would exist in the timeframe of the movie.
