When a young wife gets kidnapped while at a gas station mini mall/rest area and there's no one to help, who do you turn to? In The Vanishing, Keifer Sutherland is Jeff and Jeff Daniels as Barney Cousins are locked in a struggle to find Jeff's wife, Diane (Sandra Bullock), 3 yrs later in this thriller from 1993. Nancy Travis stars as Rita, a waitress who then becomes a fellow searcher after the truth. A very odd movie populated by strange characters. Based upon an earlier movie minus its brain, this version seems to miss the mark by a yard.

Continuity mistake: When Rita is being held by Barney in the cabin, she wipes the mud from her face with a white towel. In subsequent shots, her face goes from completely clean to streaked with smears of mud.

Cop at Gas Station: Had you had a fight recently?
Jeff Harriman: Not a fight, a thing.
Cop at Gas Station: ...A thing?
Jeff Harriman: Yeah, a thing, don't you have a girlfriend?
Cop at Gas Station: Yeah. And what you think is a thing, you can bet your life she thinks is a fight.

Question: Why is there someone (looks like a policeman) lying in the road when Jeff's girlfriend, Diane, vanishes from the service station? (00:22:00 - 00:24:00)

Answer: He is a crew member lying in the road directly behind the brown G.R.S. Dye Works semi-truck (presumably trying to remain hidden from the camera's view), and we even see his right hand waving off the traffic ahead of him (00:22:05).
