Esther Blodgett is a singer. She's singing at an awards show when she meets Norman Maine, an actor who is drunk more often than he's sober. She saves him from disaster, and in return, he gets her a screen test from the studio head. She's renamed Vicki Lester, becomes successful and soon her career eclipses her now husband's. Norman tries to reform and does for a while, but backslides and ends up back where he started, washed up and drunk. He asks to see his wife's face one last time and then walks into the ocean, never to be seen again. Vicki gets depressed and a friend talks to her before announcing at the Academy Awards, "I am Mrs Norman Maine".
Esther Hoffman: You can trash your life but you're not going to trash mine.
