In 1980 a young and ambitious Patricia Reggiani catches the attention of Maurizio Gucci, the heir to the Gucci fortune. Their whirlwind romance leads to marriage in 1985, despite concerns from Maurizio's uncle, Aldo Gucci, about Patricia's intentions and background.

As Maurizio takes over the family business, tensions rise within the Gucci family. Maurizio's cousin, Paolo Gucci, is vying for a higher position in the company, leading to disagreements and distrust among the family members.

In the late 1980s, Maurizio hires a consultant named Domenico De Sole to help revitalize and modernize Gucci. However, Patricia feels threatened by Domenico's influence and believes he is seeking to push her out of the company. The couple starts drifting apart due to their differing opinions on how to run the business.

Simultaneously, Patricia becomes consumed by envy and paranoia, suspecting Maurizio of infidelity. She seeks solace in Pina Auriemma, a fortune teller who further fuels Patricia's fears and encourages her to take action.

In 1993, Maurizio decides to divorce Patricia, which triggers her anger and bitterness. Determined to take revenge, she hires a hitman named Benedetto Ceraulo to kill Maurizio. The hit goes as planned, and Maurizio is murdered outside his office in 1995, leaving the Gucci family and the fashion industry in shock.

The murder investigation quickly turns its focus toward Patricia, and she is arrested along with Benedetto and his accomplice. The trial becomes a media spectacle, as Patricia is portrayed as a vindictive, money-hungry woman.

Despite her claims of innocence, Patricia is eventually convicted and sentenced to 29 years in prison. Meanwhile, the Gucci family and the fashion empire face challenging times, with various members falling out of favor and the business suffering financially.

Years later, in 2016, a grown-up Alessandra Gucci, Maurizio's daughter, seeks justice for her father's murder. She contacts journalist Sara Gay Forden, who gathers evidence to support Alessandra's claims that the Gucci family's involvement in Maurizio's assassination went beyond Patricia's actions.

In the end, Patricia is released from prison in 2016, with the Gucci family slowly attempting to rebuild the empire. However, the stain of betrayal and murder remains on the prestigious House of Gucci forever.

Patrizia Reggiani: It was a name that sounded so sweet... Synonymous with wealth, style, power. But that name was a curse, too.

Question: This may have been explored in the movie but a bit unsure... how come Gucci had to sell out? Was it financial difficulty?

Answer: Yes. Basically, within the narrative of the film, Maurizio is weak-willed and easily manipulated by Patrizia; he didn't even want to be involved in running Gucci in the first place and has no real business acumen. So, he both overextends the firm and spends a huge amount of money on an extravagant lifestyle, which leaves him in financial trouble and at the mercy of a hostile takeover.
