Rain Man (1988)

Corrected entry: When he's frightened at the airport, Raymond states "Qantas never crashed." Between 1927 and 1951 eight Qantas aircraft crashed and one was shot down by Japanese fighters. A total of 70 people lost their lives. In its modern incarnation Qantas has had a few near misses but no fatalities, but nonetheless Raymond is incorrect, and an idiot savant with perfect recall would not make a mistake like that.

David Mercier

Correction: Perfect recall doesn't mean 100% knowledge of every fact relating to every historical event. Qantas is often referred to as having a 100% safety record (though they never allow this to be used in their advertising - it makes people think they are "due") and doubtless Raymond is familiar with the claim. He isn't familiar with their operations in the forties and fifties, and there is no reason he would be. He can't recall something about which he has not been told in the first place.

Corrected entry: There is a scene where Mr Holland discusses Beethoven with his students and the camera pans over a record player. The camera is reflected in the sheen of the record.

David Mercier

Correction: Reviewed the entire scene 3 times. No camera reflection in either of the 3 shots of the rotating record.

Red Dragon (2002)

Corrected entry: When Dolarhyde shoots Ralph Mandy outside Reba's house, it is very apparent that the red hole in his forehead is there before he gets shot. It's even more obvious in slow-motion where you can see the entry wound from the start and he reacts when the blood explodes from the back of his head and not when the bullet supposedly enters from the front.

David Mercier

Correction: I watched this last night and the camera instantly cuts to him with the wound in his forehead after the shot of Dolarhyde shooting him. The wound isn't already there. And him reacting to the bullet exiting his head rather than getting shot in the first place isn't a mistake either, as the bullet travels faster than his ability to process what just happened to him.

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Corrected entry: Why don't the "beer" bottles on the floor of the van fall over? When the cop stops Harry and Lloyd the bottles are all standing perfectly upright and there has not been any spillage on the floor. Bear in mind that before this they had been driving on the verge and stopping and swaying when the cop tells them to pull over. And Harry is only holding 3, and yet 6 appear on the floor. (00:26:40)

David Mercier

Correction: Those bottles were the ones Harry were holding, he put them on the floor after they stopped. And Harry was holding 4 bottles.

ER (1994)

Correction: Mark does not call Peter "Eriq", he calls him "Peter" - he says it quickly and the audio is a bit unclear with the sounds of street traffic, but if you turn up the volume, it is indeed Peter.

Correction: I agree with the correction, Greene does not say "Eriq" at all. Benton says, "Hey, Mark," to which Greene replies, "Peter" and then continues talking.

Super Grover

Correction: I heard Eriq while watching E.R. Via Hulu. This may have been changed for the DVD version.

Lindsay LeValley Mackey

I've seen the Hulu version and hear him say "Peter." The subtitles even confirm it.

Bishop73

Corrected entry: Leaving aside the many inaccuracies which have come to light since the discovery of the wreck, there are many details about the Titanic that should have been known to the film-makers. Including that the words "Titanic" and "Liverpool" on the stern were painted on, and not done in raised lettering as shown in the film.

David Mercier

Correction: In the historic picture of the stern of Titanic as she steamed out to her fate, the names Titanic and Liverpool weren't on the stern. They were inserted by the photographer after the photo was taken for identification, and to distinguish it from it's sister ships Britannic and Olympic.

Frasier (1993)

An Affair to Forget - S2-E21

Corrected entry: Why can Niles hear what Frasier has said when he is inside the sensory deprivation tank? The whole point of these are that you cannot hear anything happening outside, so Frasier's ranting shouldn't have been heard inside. Similarly, why did the writers even have this scene with Frasier trying to talk to "Maris" when she was supposed to be inside it? Clearly they didn't quite know how soundproof they are.

David Mercier

Correction: The accusation that Niles could not hear Frasier because he was in a Sensory Deprivation Tank is completely false. Having owned one myself for many years it is true that you can not hear light sounds but if someone is talking loudly enough you can hear them and understand what they are saying to you. This is why earplugs are recommended for people wanting to experience Sensory Deprivation to full effect, as well as keep salt water out of your ears if you have ear problems.

Three Amigos (1986)

Corrected entry: When Dusty is playing the guitar around the camp fire, his hand movement doesn't match the sound at all. In particular, you can hear several chord changes when he doesn't move his hand up or down.

David Mercier

Correction: Yes he does, if you play the guitar, it is an open "E" chord. It requires very minimal movement for that chord change. Just move the same chord up one half step, strum all the strings, go back and that's the whole part you see.

Immortal Beloved (1994)

Corrected entry: Beethoven is seen removing the dedication to Napoleon from the title page of "Eroica" at the same time as the siege of Vienna. The dedication was removed several years before, when Napoleon declared himself Emperor of France.

David Mercier

Correction: The filmmakers do not claim this film to be historically accurate. It contains many historical inaccuracies and takes liberties regarding people and events. As such, it comes down to a deliberate directorial decision and artistic license.

Groundhog Day (1993)

Corrected entry: It is clear that Phil arrives at Gobbler's Nob at a slightly different time each day, some days earlier, some days later. Why then does that song that keeps on playing there start the moment he arrives - it's never part of the way through, it starts when he comes into shot.

David Mercier

Correction: He doesn't always arrive at the beginning of the song - In the first two Groundhog Days, the same time passes between the time he wakes up and the time where he's at Gobbler's Nob. At the third Groundhog Day, he rushes towards Gobbler's Nob, therefore the song starts to play when he's in the MIDDLE of Gobbler's Nob, not when he enters it. Every time the song begins when he's in different parts of the knob, therefore creating an illusion that it's the same day, over and over again.

Friends (1994)

The One with the Boobies - S1-E13

Corrected entry: In the coffee house when Joey's dad asks Ross "How's the wife?" he moves his head and makes a groaning sound. His lips do not visibly move, and there is no other indication that he made this noise. It also sounds strange and misplaced in the shot if you listen to it in surround sound, implying it was dubbed in afterwards. (00:04:10)

David Mercier

Correction: The sound that Ross makes is perfectly possible as his mouth is slightly open. You don't need to move your lips to groan.

Dwarf

Corrected entry: At one point during the bombing of the Consulate, the chandelier falls down onto the table. You can plainly see that the footage of this has been sped up to make it appear to fall quicker, due to the rapid movement of the characters' heads.

David Mercier

Correction: This isn't a film mistake. 'Fast motion' gags appear in almost all the Carry On films - a technique later copied by Jamie Uys in the Gods Must Be Crazy films. This is a film technique, not a mistake.

My Hero (2) - S1-E23

Corrected entry: When Dr. Kelso is confronting Dr. Reed about her assessment of him, the clock behind them is at 1:50. The shot changes and then changes back and you can't even see the clock hands (they've moved to above the frame of the shot), and less than 10 seconds had passed.

David Mercier

Correction: The clock is only seen twice during the conversation, and on both occasions the time is the same at 1:50.

Licence to Kill (1989)

Corrected entry: At the airport Bond puts his ticket into his right hand inside pocket, but when he later produces them at the check in desk he takes it out of the left pocket.

David Mercier

Correction: That's not the ticket he takes out of his left pocket - it is his passport.

ER (1994)

Correction: Sometimes the wind changes directions all the time. Just last night I had to fight with my umbrella because the wind kept changing directions; the rain and my hair, was blowing all over the place.

Broken Arrow (1996)

Corrected entry: The shockwave which moves through the ground is going about 10 mph when it reaches the jeep; it should be much faster, possibly around the speed of sound.

David Mercier

Correction: Not so. Earth is a terrific dampener for shockwaves. Films showing shockwaves during nuclear testing show a big difference when detonated underground as opposed to underwater or above ground.

Broken Arrow (1996)

Corrected entry: When Hale is looking at the map for train routes, there is only one big red rail line going across the map. Surely there are 100s of rail routes into Salk Lake City and Denver, and yet the only one on this map is the one Deakins is going to use.

David Mercier

Correction: The map he is using shows the routes for one particular rail line, not all of the companies that exist. Furthermore, in mountains it is likely there is going to be only one line through, with spur lines branching off to smaller locations, just due to geography.

Fawlty Towers (1975)

Show generally

Corrected entry: The Grandfather-Clock in the lobby is often showing the incorrect time for the time of day. I think in the "Wedding Party" episode it says 6.15 at breakfast time and in "The Hotel Inspector" it says 4.05 at lunchtime. Possibly deliberate, given the shambolic nature of the hotel, but worth looking out for.

David Mercier

Correction: "Possibly deliberate". Not a film mistake, then.

9th May 2004

Cool Runnings (1993)

Corrected entry: At several points you can see a team called "England" on the scoreboard in Jamaica. England does not compete in the Olympics or Winter Olympics as an individual nation, but as part of "Great Britain" including Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland.

David Mercier

Correction: That scoreboard was drawn and being 'supervised' by a load of very young kids from Jamaica. It is their mistake if they don't know the difference between England and Great Britain, not the movie's.

14th Apr 2004

Speed (1994)

Corrected entry: At the start when the explosion goes off, supposedly killing Dennis Hopper, you can see that the explosion actually forms a shape around the door frame and that the wall blows inwards. This is because of the individual charges placed around the door to make this effect work, in fact you can see the holes that they cause. In an explosion such as this, probably the first thing to happen would be for the door itself (the weakest point in the wall) to be blown off rather than the wall coming away with the door in it.

David Mercier

Correction: You have to remember that this explosion was set up by Howard Payne to make it look like he died. He may have deliberately rigged the charges around the door to make it look like a bigger explosion than it actually was.

Dr Muppet

It's more likely that the OP is correct, and this is a blooper/mistake.
