Independence Day (1996)

Corrected entry: I am just curious as to how Jasmine has time to look in the mirror, see the alien plasma wall about 400 yards away, curse, get the slow witted child out, pick up her bag, run to the door, kick the door in and call the dog which gets to them safely. This plasma moves at about 180mph as it was comfortably keeping up with Air Force One when it was taking off. (00:48:35)

David Mercier

Correction: Firstly, the fireball was a lot further than 400 yards away from Jasmine. Secondly, that scene was edited to show loads of different things happening at once and most of it was shown in slow motion so there is no way of knowing exactly how long the fireball took to reach her.

Corrected entry: When they "pick up" Beethoven, he is performing Für Elise in front of an audience, a work which was never publicly performed.

David Mercier

Correction: This looked more like a private party than a public performance.

Playing for a private party is playing the piece publicly (i.e. for others to hear).

Towering Alan - S1-E6

Corrected entry: Alan brings in a load of boxes for a large Bang & Olufson stereo system. There is no reason to suspect he is lying about this purchase as he has just got a TV contract and a hefty income. However, the new stereo seen later in his room is a tiny one made by Alba. So not only is the stereo the wrong make, you have to question how the writers missed the obvious problem caused by the huge boxes and then the small stereo.

David Mercier

Correction: Alan has not set up his Bang & Olufson system. He is leaving the hotel the next day. The Alba stereo has been there for a while. At the crematorium earlier in the episode, Alan was on the phone trying to track down some speakers for an Alba stereo.

Rollerball (1975)

Corrected entry: The final game between New York and Houston is said to not have a time limit. However, we are treated to a number of shots of the scoreboard counting down.

David Mercier

Correction: I studied this movie in my English class during my senior year in high school, and my teacher, who has watched it multiple times, said that they have the time on the scoreboard for statistics; to show how much time it took.

Scrooged (1988)

Corrected entry: At one point Preston and Frank order the same drink, I think it's called a "High Ball" or something. If they have ordered the same drink, why is one clear and the other orange?

David Mercier

Correction: Robert Mitchum's glass has an ice cube in it, which wouldn't affect the colour of the liquid. Bill's glass has an eye ball in it, with associated attachments, which would most likely leak into the liquid and change the colour.

Frasier (1993)

Correction: Clearly, the train that passes is on a different rail to them, and it is their rail that has the electrical problem.

The Patriot (2000)

Corrected entry: It's strange that all the "Redcoats" in the entire film have pronounced British accents. When you consider nearly 90% of the British force was made up of German mercenaries, it's odd that we never hear any speak in German or any with the slightest hint of a German accent.

David Mercier

Correction: While you are right that there were numerous German mercenaries fighting on the side of the British during the war, their numbers were nowhere near 90%. Rough estimates put it at around 25%, largely located in the Northern colonies which the British felt as "captured" and those not worth wasting British troops to guard. Also, Lord Cornwallis would never have fought with any troops other than British troops he had trained and knew their duty to his satisfaction.

However, it is interesting that there are absolutely no "English" accents amongst the Americans, at this point wouldn't all American accents sound more British by comparison to today?

Corrected entry: When Jesus is thirsty on the cross, a Roman soldier puts a sponge on the end of a spear and holds it up to him. Notice when he forces the sponge on the spear it goes right through and comes out the other side. However, when it is by Jesus' mouth it is just about held on at the end, and we never saw the soldier change its position.

David Mercier

Correction: The sponge was compressed when the spear was driven through it. It decompressed when the pressure was taken off.

Frasier (1993)

Correction: No, it's a clear indication of two light sources inside the shop.

Junior (1994)

Corrected entry: When Arnie goes into labour and has locked himself in the room, why do the nurses and doctor not come in to help? Although they don't know the details of the situation, "she" is in a lot of pain and needs medical assistance. There must be a way for getting into the room, otherwise cleaners, room service etc. could not get in. It just seems a little hard to believe that a dozen medical professionals would wait patiently outside a room when a "woman" is in labour inside it.

David Mercier

Correction: The doctors and other staff do not know that 'Alexandra' is in labour. When they first escort her to her room, she says "I'm fine, I just need a lie down". The doctors obviously believe she has pain related to something else less serious than labour.

Broken Arrow (1996)

Corrected entry: The EMP that brings down the chopper for some reason has no effect on the circuits of the remaining nuke, nor or Deakins' watch which he continues to use afterwards. It would fry them irrespective of if they were turned off or not; similarly the same effect would prevent their jeep from working afterwards.

David Mercier

Correction: If a electronic device is off, an EMP has no effect. John Travolta is shown turning his watch off just before the nuke explodes. As the effects of radioactive material at close range is worse on electronic than an EMP, the nuke's electronics are protected from it plus an EMP. (Same issue in space, electronics must be protected from the electrons that are charged and would have the same effect). The Jeep has no real electronic components that would be fried that would prevent it from running, even though John turns the Jeep off too.

It does not matter if an electronic device is off or on; any device within the EMP zone will be rendered useless.

Anthony Lemons

Season 1 generally

Corrected entry: At several points in this series, when there is a scene in the hotel lobby, keep an eye on the clock. Frequently, despite many minutes passing the clock doesn't move. This was probably done to avoid continuity errors arising from the time changing, but it actually creates one in itself.

David Mercier

Correction: No, it creates a scene where a hotel has a broken clock in the lobby.

Corrected entry: When they are washing Shaun in the "Knit-o-Matic", the light changes from "wash" to "light shave" due to a fault. However, at one point Wallace says "Do something Gromit", and if you look at the console after this the light is back to "wash" again even though it is doing the light shave.

David Mercier

Correction: Time and again in this film and 'A Grand Day Out' and 'The Wrong Trousers' it is demonstrated that Wallace's inventions have a life of their own. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, sometimes somewhere in between. This is one of those times.

The Simpsons (1989)

Correction: Bart is (and has always been) left-handed. Check out which hand he writes with in the opening credits. This is because Matt Groening himself is left-handed - it's just that sometimes the animators forget, so in some episodes Bart is shown to be writing with his right hand.

Dude, Where's My Ranch? - S14-E18

Corrected entry: This is a minor mistake, but why does Luke say he needs help "hanging up these signs" when they have a stake on the end to impale them into the ground? If he had said "put up" then OK, but he said "hang," so this is a mistake because there is no way to hang them up like a hook or something.

David Mercier

Correction: It is just a simple expression that does not necessarily mean what it says, just like "kick your butt" could involve no kicking.

Correction: She drops it into the bag behind her.

Bender Should Not Be Allowed on TV - S5-E15

Corrected entry: Whenever the Network Execubot is talking it appears in a box with a scroll bar like it was just a file playing. Naturally if it were actually talking this would not happen. I think it must be a deliberate mistake, making fun of this sort of error that often happens in films (there is a good example of this in Jurassic Park), as it's ridiculous that they would have animated this and not realised the error.

David Mercier

Correction: This is a gag, not a goof, EXACTLY as you noted. There is no goof.

Broken Arrow (1996)

Corrected entry: When they use the helicopter to "give those guys a hair cut" towards the end of the film the rotor blades do some serious damage to one of the guys. However, in reality this would cause serious damage to the blades themselves and would most likely cause them to stall as there would be a sudden force put upon them.

David Mercier

Correction: Similar "errors" have been posted for 'The Last Boy Scout' and 'Vertical Limit'. Helicopter rotor blades are made of a steel/titanium alloy and move at several hundred kilometres an hour. A human body has no chance against them. In fact, accidents on helicopter landing decks are not uncommon and usually result in the victim being decapitated or cut in half, with little or no damage to the helicopter's rotor blades.

Bottom (1991)

Correction: So hows that a mistake? the fridge in my house operates on a different fuse, so if i get a powercut during the night/day, the fridge constantly stays on.

Futurama (1999)

Bend Her - S5-E13

Corrected entry: Calculon says in this episode that as a robot he never sleeps at night. But we have seen Bender and numerous other robots sleep on several different occasions - he even dreams about "killing all humans" when he is asleep.

David Mercier

Correction: Calculon could be a model of robot that doesn't require a "sleeping" period at night. Alternatively, it could be unnecessary for robots to sleep, but in order to conserve energy when they don't need to do anything they go into a state of low power consumption, seeing as it would probably take energy for a robot to stay turned on, and what would be the point of being turned on while all humans are asleep and unable to give the robot orders?
