Corrected entry: When Charlie's mother is in the hospital, Charlie puts up crosses all over the walls and windows, supposedly to keep Jerry away. However, this was after the scene where Charlie held up a cross to Jerry on the roadway and Jerry grabbed the cross and it caught fire. So, Charlie would have known that the crosses had no detrimental effect on Jerry.

Correction: They do have an effect on Jerry; he showed signs of physical pain when he touched the crucifix, and it only burst into flame because he was touching it. Also, that was only one crucifix, so it's likely that he would not be able to pass through tens of them.
