Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Revealing mistake: In the close-up of Jack as he swims to get his gun, etc, his left sleeve is pushed up and it's very obvious that he's wearing something with short sleeves under his white shirt. This isn't part of his white shirt. He has nothing on under his white shirt at any other time. (The underwater close-up of Depp was filmed in a tank at Long Beach along with the close-ups rescuing Elizabeth earlier.) (01:34:50)

Revealing mistake: When Jack is aboard the Black Pearl, as Will makes demands we see Jack's very grimy hands and dirt embedded fingernails. Jack dives and retrieves his sword and gun underwater, and when he does the hands that lift the sword and gun underwater are perfectly clean and have very well manicured fingernails. Once on the island, his hands are as grimy as they were on the Pearl and his fingernails are once again short and dirty. (01:34:50)

Revealing mistake: Using the loop on Jack's shackle, Will traps Jack to the beam above with his sword. The distinctive patterns on the planks of the cart that Jack stands on differs from the patterns on the planks shown under Jack, while he hangs from the beam. It's not the same cart. Also, while Jack hangs over the cart, the cut out at the corner of the cart is seen over Jack's left shoulder. In the cut out, the linkage which is used for the wire is seen in a couple of shots. (The wire can be seen on Disc 2.) (00:25:30)

Revealing mistake: The medallion's necklace has very narrow bar links, with one loop link at the end and it's not adjustable at all. When Elizabeth wears it in some shots, the necklace hangs much shorter, for example during her failed blood ritual. As the medallion falls into the Aztec chest during Elizabeth's ritual, the chain is even shorter. In other scenes it's long enough to tuck into her bodice as in a later scene aboard Interceptor with Will, when she gives him the medallion. When Will wears it, it's again much shorter, which can not be excused because he has a man's neck. The clasp closure is seen intact and it's not adjustable. It's simply a few different length necklaces used. The necklace gets ripped off, but that's also not an excuse for the length difference because as noted in another mistake the type of closure it has makes that impossible to do. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Revealing mistake: When Jack and Elizabeth are marooned on the island, Jack wants to know why the rum is gone. Elizabeth sits down in front of Jack, and as he stands behind her, he puts his fists up to his chin in frustration. His right forearm does not have the sun and sparrow tattoo showing, although part of it should be. The entire tattoo would not be hidden under his sleeve, makeup simply did not apply it for this shot. (01:39:20)

Revealing mistake: During the destruction at Isengard, Treebeard says, "Break the dam. Release the river." While he says that, there is a close-up of the dam wall as the Ent pulls away the wood blockades. We see the water starting to spurt between certain stones. Then there is a wide shot of the area, and in this shot, the water does not start to spurt between the same stones or in the same manner as in the previous close-up. (01:31:50)

Revealing mistake: There are quite a few times where the Uruk-hai fitted skin wrinkles, creases or bubbles up where they shouldn't. Some examples are, at Helm's Deep, while they fight on the Deeping Wall, as the Uruks climb the ladders and when Gandalf charges with the Rohirrim. (01:05:30)

Revealing mistake: Jack slips aboard Interceptor and Murtogg and Mullroy run aboard and confront him. In Jack's close-up he begins to say, "Well then, I confess." The next shot is of Murtogg and Mullroy, while Jack continues to say, "It is my intention," and as he says, "to commandeer one of these ships..." there is a shot from behind Mullroy's right shoulder. As Jack speaks, Mullroy turns his head to the right and quickly glances peripherally to his side at the camera, so as not to bump into the steadicam at his elbow. Angus is not looking at anything else. (00:13:50)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Revealing mistake: Jack and Elizabeth are marooned on the island, and he goes down the stairs to the cache of rum. From below, he lifts his right arm up holding a bottle of rum and we see the pirate brand. It's a CG brand, and in this shot, the pirate brand is crooked and off to the side. It doesn't look the same as the close-up when Norrington lifts Jack's sleeve in Port Royal, and it's not because of camera angle. Jack's sun and sparrow tattoo isn't where it's supposed to be either. At this point in filming, this 'tattoo' on his arm is not a real tattoo, it is only applied for specific shots, and make-up didn't apply it for this shot. (This has nothing to do with Depp's real tattoo that he supposedly got later, after filming.) (01:36:15)

Revealing mistake: At Helm's Deep, Theoden says, "I want every man and strong lad..." behind them is Gimli, who has a conspicuously reddish face, and his beard is split down the middle into two braids. Éowyn confronts Aragorn, she apologizes and hurries off, walking between Legolas and Gimli, who looks the same as in the earlier shot. It's obviously Brett (scale double) in both shots, the beard with its two thin braids are completely different when next we see Gimli, in a close-up at the armory. This time the beard is full, with hair between the two very thick braids, and his face is a normal color. (00:51:50 - 00:52:55)

Super Grover

Revealing mistake: The braids over Legolas' ears on his scalp, change drastically in position, shape, amount of hair that's braided and how it is braided, as does the amount of his side hair that is swept up into the back braid, in consecutive shots! The hair differs considerably in the following shots. In the armory, when Legolas and Aragorn argue and when Legolas apologizes to Aragorn, for despairing. When Legolas watches Aragorn hugging Haldir. When Legolas stands with Aragorn and Gimli on the Deeping Wall, awaiting the Uruk-hai. As Legolas lets loose the arrows towards the Berserker Uruk-hai. In these two shots too. First, standing outside of Fangorn with Aragorn and Gimli (flipped shot). Then, in Fangorn, saying, "This forest is old..."(flipped shot). (00:58:15 - 01:00:35)

Revealing mistake: There are quite a few times where the Uruk-hai fitted skins wrinkle, crease or even bubble up where they shouldn't. Some examples are at Amon Hen, when the Uruk-hai show up and they fight Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas and Gimli. (01:19:25)

Super Grover

Revealing mistake: While Boromir battles with the Uruk-hai at Amon Hen, to protect Merry and Pippin, there is a close-up of Pippin running towards an Uruk. In the first shot we see Pippin's face. In the next wide shot, not only are the two scale doubles noticeable, the back of the Uruk that Pippin is jumping onto, is also very different than in the next shot. The Uruk's back is much dirtier in this shot, and the clothes are different too. (01:22:10)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Revealing mistake: Keira's stunt double Sonia is obvious in different shots throughout the film. When Elizabeth walks onto the deck of the Pearl, only to see the skeletal pirates, she stumbles backward and lands on the tarp, and it's very apparent that the one who comes back down from mid-air onto the tarp and goes back up is Sonia. Later on Isla de Muerta, Elizabeth whacks Jacoby (burning beard) with the gold rod and soon after she approaches a second pirate. This pirate is very pleased with himself when he takes the gold bowl off his head, and we can then see it is Sonia actually whacking him, but in the very next shot it is Keira reacting to whacking the guy. (00:59:05 - 02:00:05)

Revealing mistake: During the Warg battle, as Aragorn slices off the head of a Warg rider, in the background on the hill there are two Rohan riders on horseback, one on a brown horse, one on a white horse, riding down the hill chasing after Orcs on foot. There are many shots after, including Aragorn throwing the spear into the Warg saving Gimli, and Theoden stabbing the Warg in his mouth. The next shots of Aragorn are when he stabs a Warg rider. The background plate is the same hill and the same two Rohan riders on horseback are still riding down the hill chasing after the Orcs on foot. Obviously these two pieces of footage were shot consecutively and were cut and separated, and other various shots were inserted in between them. (00:11:35 - 00:12:20)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Revealing mistake: In the close-up of Barbossa cutting Elizabeth's hand, we see as the blade goes across Elizabeth's palm, leaving an obvious thin red line where the blade sliced, but not leaving blood on the blade as it slices. The creases in her palm are also unaffected by the 'cut' that's being made. Yet when Barbossa holds the blade up to his face, the blade now has a good amount of blood on both sides. (01:12:00)

Revealing mistake: Éomer yells, "To the King!" at Helm's Deep and the Rohirrim begin to ride down, towards the Uruk-hai. In the very first wide shot of Gandalf, starting to lead them down, there is a clear reflection of three of the riders and their horses, shown on the ground. (01:29:55)

Revealing mistake: As the Uruk-hai are slamming into the chamber door, with the battering ram, Gimli and Legolas are standing at the door. Across the room, Aragorn says, "Ride out with me," then in the next three shots of Theoden, he's standing in front of the same wall, with particular markings. In the very next shot, Gimli says, "The sun is rising," and he's standing right in front of the very same wall that Theoden is standing right in front of. Then, in the next shot, still standing at that wall, Theoden says, "Yes. Yes. The Horn of Helm Hammerhand..." Both Theoden and Gimli, can not be in front of the same wall at the same time. In the next shot of Gimli, still standing at that same wall, responds, "Yes." He then starts to go off to blow the Horn. The next shot, is a close-up of the door - all the men in front of it and some wood are knocked away, due to the force of the battering ram. In the next shot, as Theoden says, "Let this be the hour when we draw swords..." between Aragorn and Theoden, the men are seen huddled together at the door again, and Legolas and Gimli are there too. Yet, in the next shot, Gimli is hurriedly running up the steps of the tower to the Horn. (01:27:20)

Revealing mistake: When Will opens the door to the blacksmith shop, behind him to his right is the sign for the silversmith across the courtyard. When the Royal Navy bursts in to capture Jack, behind the men is the same sign for the silversmith. The wall and silversmith sign in both of these background composites differ with each other in position, angle and dimension in relation to the door and the people standing in the doorway in both shots. This has nothing to do with the camera angle of the two shots. (00:21:55 - 00:26:50)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Revealing mistake: Norrington says, "Gillette, Mr. Sparrow has a dawn appointment with the gallows..." and he's standing at the dock. When he says the name Gillette, there is an unobstructed view. Behind Norrington to HIS right is the bottom part of the mountain's rocky cliffside and we do not see Dauntless moored. At this angle the Dauntless should be seen, though the digital editors neglected to add it. (00:20:30)
