Continuity mistake: When Fili and Kili arrive, the door is left open. We never hear the door close, yet it is closed when Bilbo goes to get the door for Gandalf and the other dwarves. (00:19:00 - 00:19:40)

Suggested correction: So... What's your point? I can, and I'm sure you can, close your door without making a sound. Plus the scene isn't one continuous shot so there is no reason it couldn't have been closed off camera.

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Dwalin arrives, Bilbo has his hand on the door when he says "Is what down where?" His hand is by his side in the following shot. (00:16:35)

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: The scene where Bilbo first meets Gandalf. As Bilbo says "Not Gandalf the wandering wizard who made such excellent fireworks?", the grip of Gandalf's staff changes between two shots. (00:14:10)

Continuity mistake: Frodo puts a fresh smooth sign on the Bag End gate. In Fellowship, when Gandalf arrived at Bag End, the sign was all tattered around the edges. (00:11:25)

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: When Frodo is talking to Bilbo about him being unsociable, Bilbo starts to turn to Frodo with a note to put on the gate. In the next shot, he starts to turn around again. (00:11:20)

Continuity mistake: The shot where Frodo walks back into Bag End with the mail and the shot where Gandalf knocks on the Bag End door in Fellowship of the Ring are apparently the same setting, but it is different between the two different movies. First, the grass around the bench closest to the door has long grass around it, but there is short grass in Fellowship. Second, behind the bench is some sort of bucket on its own. In Fellowship, there are a few things next to it that aren't even there in The Hobbit. Third, further behind the bench is a lamp post, about a meter and a half away from some pink flowers, that was right next to the pink flowers in Fellowship. Fourth, next to the window are some green flowers that cover half of the windows. In Fellowship, those green flowers are a much lighter green and cover the entire window. Considering only an hour passed between these two times it's hardly possible the flowers would grow, and since Bilbo was too busy working on his story, he wouldn't have moved something. (00:09:30)

Continuity mistake: In the opening scene with older Bilbo and Frodo, the mailbox is next to the gate. In Fellowship of the Ring, the mailbox was behind the edge of the gate. (00:09:20)

Casual Person

Continuity mistake: When the Arkenstone is found, the miner who found it has one hand on the wall and his other hand by his side. In the next shot, one of his hands is suddenly reaching for the stone. (00:03:35)

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey mistake picture

Continuity mistake: At the dinner scene at Bilbo's house, just before Bofur throws the egg at Bombur's mouth, Fili is seen sitting next to Bombur. Yet as Bombur catches the egg, Ori is now sitting where Fili was sitting.

Trivia: When Gandalf and the dwarves are fighting their way out of The Misty Mountains, one of the goblins is knocked off a bridge and lets out a recognisable Wilhelm scream.

Question: What happened to Radagast? One minute he's running away from the Orcs, but then the Orc is standing on a stone and then Radagast disappears for the rest of the movie.

Casual Person

Chosen answer: We are never told, but given his confidence in his rabbits and the fact that he is a wizard of equal power to Gandalf (even if he has gone a bit odd), we can presume he escapes. Radagast doesn't appear in the book, his presence was pretty much invented for the movie, however he does appear very briefly in the first book of the Lord of the Rings (though not in the movie), so as far as the overall story goes, he must survive.

Question: The Hobbit trilogy takes place 60 years before Lord Of The Rings, and it is shown that Bilbo takes the Ring from Gollum and escapes the Misty Mountains with it. What exactly has Gollum been doing for the past 60 years?

Casual Person

Chosen answer: It took Gollum a few years to summon up the courage to leave his cave to try to find Bilbo, but, unsurprisingly, he found that the trail had gone cold. Wandering in the hope of picking up the scent, he ended up on the edge of Mordor, where he encountered Shelob and became her servant, spying on her behalf, luring food into her lair and so forth. Eventually, captured by Sauron's forces, he gave up the names of Baggins and the Shire under torture, alerting Sauron to the existence and potential significance of Hobbits. He was freed, only to be captured again, this time by Gandalf and Aragorn who wanted to question him about the Ring before placing him in elven custody in Mirkwood. Escaping from there, Gollum hid out in Moria where he first picked up the trail of the Fellowship.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Just after Radagast has a flashback of him seeing the Necromancer, some of the white stuff on his beard disappears briefly in the shot where he inhales the stuff in Gandalf's pipe. (01:15:20)

Casual Person

Other mistake: In this movie, Gandalf looks older than he does in his grey incarnation in Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring. However, this takes place before the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, so he should look younger, or the same.
