Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Revealing mistake: The medallion's necklace has very narrow bar links, with one loop link at the end and it's not adjustable at all. When Elizabeth wears it in some shots, the necklace hangs much shorter, for example during her failed blood ritual. As the medallion falls into the Aztec chest during Elizabeth's ritual, the chain is even shorter. In other scenes it's long enough to tuck into her bodice as in a later scene aboard Interceptor with Will, when she gives him the medallion. When Will wears it, it's again much shorter, which can not be excused because he has a man's neck. The clasp closure is seen intact and it's not adjustable. It's simply a few different length necklaces used. The necklace gets ripped off, but that's also not an excuse for the length difference because as noted in another mistake the type of closure it has makes that impossible to do. Continuity mistake: Barbossa rips the chain and medallion off Elizabeth's neck, puts it into her palm, then cuts her hand. He takes her hand in his and he turns hers over so it's palm down. The chain can be seen in the close-up and wide shot, dangling down between her fingers and the chain is NOT clasped shut. In the next close-up of the chain and medallion falling into the chest, the chain IS clasped shut. (01:11:55)

Revealing mistake: In the close-up of Barbossa cutting Elizabeth's hand, we see as the blade goes across Elizabeth's palm, leaving an obvious thin red line where the blade sliced, but not leaving blood on the blade as it slices. The creases in her palm are also unaffected by the 'cut' that's being made. Yet when Barbossa holds the blade up to his face, the blade now has a good amount of blood on both sides. (01:12:00)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Revealing mistake: The clasp closure on the medallion's chain is NOT the sort that just comes apart when yanked on, evident in the many close-ups of the clasp throughout the film. Yet there are a number of scenes in which the chain is just pulled and it comes off easily: Elizabeth pulls it off aboard the Pearl, to barter with; Barbossa pulls it off, during her blood ritual; Elizabeth pulls it off to give to Will, aboard the Interceptor... The chain was secured to her neck with sellotape, in order for it to come off quickly for the shots. (01:12:15 - 01:19:28)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: After cutting Elizabeth's hand, Barbossa says, "Waste not," and there's a wide back shot of the two of them, Barbossa is holding the knife in his right hand, and the edge of the blade does not have blood on it. In the very next shot, a close-up of the medallion falling from Elizabeth's hand, the edge of the blade now has blood on it. In a later shot when Barbossa looks at the blade, there is blood on both sides. (01:12:15)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: After the cutting of Elizabeth's hand, the knife's blade is shown six times. 1st- a wide shot from behind, the blade has no blood on it. 2nd- a close-up, as Elizabeth lets go of the medallion. 3rd- a front shot, as Barbossa lets go of her hand. 4th- when Barbossa puts the gun back into his belt. 5th- when he holds the blade up to his face, we see both sides. 6th- when he grabs the medallion out of the chest. In each of these shots the blood on the blade differs in amount and/or position on either side. This has nothing to do with the 'dripping' of the blood down the blade. (01:12:15)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: When the medallion drops into the chest, and when Barbossa removes it, there is blood on both sides of the medallion. When Barbossa hits Elizabeth and she falls, the medallion falls near her. In this shot we do not see any blood on the medallion. Yet when Will rescues Elizabeth, she reaches for the medallion and it now has a very obvious blood stain on it. (01:12:20 - 01:13:35)

Revealing mistake: During the first blood ritual and other moments in the film, you can tell that Geoffrey Rush's (Barbossa) eyes are yellowish only because he's wearing colored contact lenses. (01:12:45)

Continuity mistake: Pintel yells out, "How do we tell?" and his jacket is covering a reasonable amount of the white shirt underneath. In the next shot of him when he's shot by Barbossa, more of the white shirt is visible, so the bullet hole can be seen. (01:12:50)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: Barbossa finds out the truth about Elizabeth, he hits her and she falls to the bottom of the treasure heap where she lies unconscious. Then Will comes up out of the water to rescue a still unconscious Elizabeth. Her hair is different in both shots, as well as the position of the dress under her face, the pearls, the various objects lying on the ground all around her, and the medallion's chain as well. (01:13:35)

Continuity mistake: After Elizabeth's failed blood ritual, the pirates complain to Barbossa. In this shot, Bo'sun says, "And it's you who brought us..." and Mallet is standing on his own small rock. In the next wide shot, Mallet stands with his feet apart, sharing the rock with Twigg, who's closer to Koehler now. In the next shot, a close-up of Bo'sun, behind him, Mallet is standing on his own small rock again. There are other wide shots, that Mallet is seen standing on the two rocks and Twigg is in the middle of the big rock, closer to Koehler. In other close-ups, Mallet is standing on his own small rock. Continuity mistake: After being rendered unconscious by Will, a dazed Jack Sparrow runs into the pirates in the caves after the first blood sacrifice attempt. He turns around and faces Jacoby and another pirate. He turns around once again to face Pintel and all the others. But of the four shots showing Jack, one shows only Jacoby behind him, two just show the smoke from Jacoby's beard, and one shot in between, shows no pirates standing behind Jack at all. (01:15:20)

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: After Will rescues Elizabeth and brings her aboard the Interceptor, in the first shot from behind Elizabeth, Anamaria isn't holding her hat and the pirate behind Mr. Cotton is holding the tail of the parrot to keep it still. In the next couple of shots from the side, Anamaria is holding her hat because it's so windy. Just before Mr. Gibbs says, "Keep to the code," the close-up on Anamaria shows her hands down again, with no wind. In the next wide shot, Anamaria is holding her hat again due to the wind. (01:16:00)

Visible crew/equipment: Will rescues Elizabeth from Isla de Muerta and brings her back to Interceptor. Will says, "He fell behind," then Gibbs says, "Keep to the code." In between those two lines there is a shot of some of Jack's crew, and beyond the white haired man's right shoulder, a bald crew member is partially seen. He is not one of Jack's crew, as every one of them, bald or not, is accounted for on deck from the time Elizabeth comes aboard. (01:16:15)

Continuity mistake: When Jack is being locked in the brig, he has something black on his hands when on deck, but as he is being locked away, they are clean. (01:17:00)

Continuity mistake: When Jack and Barbossa are talking on the Black Pearl, Jack begins to eat an apple, then one of the crew comes in, the monkey runs towards Jack, and Jack's hand/arm goes from being close to his chest, to close to his mouth between shots. (01:17:20)

The-Immortal

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Aboard Interceptor, Will and Elizabeth are below deck, and seen on the table are candles on a plate. The three candles and the melted wax on the plate to the right of Will's elbow, differ in the opening shot, when Will says, "Here let me," and when he has the medallion and slams it down onto the table. The candles do not melt so quickly, while they have this very short conversation. (01:17:35)

Super Grover

Other mistake: Keira Knightley has very obvious makeup applied to her cheeks and especially her eyes and lips throughout the movie. First example, when she gives Will the medallion in the cabin, and second, when Barbossa points the gun at her, before Jack shoots him. Actresses wear makeup in movies, but the lip color and eye make-up are unrealistic for a kidnapped Elizabeth. It shouldn't be as dark and apparent, as it is in this movie. (01:18:10 - 02:00:55)

Super Grover

Revealing mistake: When Barbossa cuts Elizabeth's hand her nails are short. When Will rescues an unconscious Elizabeth at the cave, she reaches for the medallion and her nails are longer. When Will ties the cloth around Elizabeth's hand and she gives him the medallion, her nails are short. However, when Jack says, "Ahh, where's dear William?" her nails are now manicured and much longer. Once she's marooned on the island her nails are short again. Most scenes were filmed out of sequence, hence the difference in nail length. Her nails should have been kept the same short length for the duration of filming. (01:18:35 - 01:29:10)

Super Grover

Continuity mistake: Below deck aboard the Interceptor, Elizabeth gives Will the medallion. When Will clenches the medallion in his fist, the way the chain hangs down his fingers differs in this close-up and in the next shot, also showing his face. (01:19:15)

Question: After Elizabeth is brought to the Pearl, she threatens to drop the medallion overboard. Barbossa feigns disinterest but when Elizabeth pretends to drop it, the pirates gasp in panic. Why? So she drops it, big deal. They can't drown, the gold "calls to them" so what does it matter if she were to drop it?

Jacordx

Chosen answer: Because they'd have to find it. The gold may "call to them", but it obviously doesn't function as a millimetre perfect homing beacon or they'd never have missed the medallion years earlier when they attacked the ship carrying the young Will. Elizabeth drops it into the sea and they're going to have to spend what could be months trying to locate it - currents could take it well away from the dropping point. They've found the final missing piece; they're potentially just hours away from finally being cured. The last thing they want is to see it thrown into the sea.

Tailkinker

Well, if the crew was anxious to get the medallion then why did they act like they weren't interested in it before Elizabeth pretended to drop it?

Reverse psychology.

Ssiscool

What do you mean by reverse psychology?

By showing they are not interested in the medallion they are hoping Elizabeth will just drop it on the floor or chuck it to them as it's of no real value. However when she releases a bit of chain and the medallion drops, and the pirates lurch forward revealing that they really want the medallion and as such Elizabeth now has the upper hand in negotiations.

Ssiscool

I'm guessing Elizabeth wasn't fooled when the pirates showed disinterest in the medallion.

That's not called reverse psychology, which is used to encourage someone to change his or her mind. Doesn't work with a threat. They are feigning indifference to hide the importance of the object.
