The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) - 255 mistakes

Directed by Peter Jackson, starring Billy Boyd, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Dominic Monaghan, Elijah Wood, Hugo Weaving, Ian Holm, Ian McKellen, John Rhys-Davies, Liv Tyler, Orlando Bloom, Sean Astin, Sean Bean, Viggo Mortensen

Please note: Almost all the timecodes are from the Extended edition. Because it's split across two discs this makes timecodes rather tricky, so unless stated, the timecodes are from the beginning of the relevant disc. I know this causes confusion when ordering by time, but it's easier when actually watching them.

Mistake Revealing: When the Troll breaks through the doorway at Balin's Tomb Legolas shoots an arrow at his right shoulder. As the Troll stomps towards Sam the arrow is seen, then disappears, then seen again. When the Troll lifts up his mace the arrow is not seen, but when the mace is at the Troll's shoulder the arrow is there and the chain goes right through the arrow. As he tries to slam the mace down onto Sam the chain goes right through the arrow again. As Sam dives between the Troll's legs the arrow disappears and then reappears again. Mistake Continuity: At Balin's Tomb, Pippin backs up towards the well, we see the pail and there is a thick bunch of chain hanging out of it. In the next shot of Pippin as he backs up and turns, the pail now has one line of chain hanging out of it. Then Pippin touches the quiver of the arrow, and in the first shot of the head falling back into the well the pail yet again has a thick bunch of chain hanging out of it. Then in the next shot of Pippin turning around towards Gandalf the pail once again has the one line of chain hanging out of it. (Time) Submitted by Rikki

Mistake Continuity: At the shore, after remembering Gandalf's words, Frodo pushes the boat into the water, then jumps in, and the gear in the boat is seen. In the boat, as Frodo says, "Go back Sam," once more the gear in the boat is seen. When Frodo rescues Sam and he's climbing into the boat, the gear is seen again. In all three shots of the boat, some of that gear is arranged quite differently. (Time) Submitted by Rikki

Mistake Continuity: At the Council of Elrond, as Frodo puts the Ring on the stone table, the bottom of both sides of Legolas' cloak are on his knees. As Gandalf says, "For the Black Speach of Mordor, may yet be heard," the bottom right of Legolas' cloak is between his legs. As Boromir says, "Long has my father, the Steward of Gondor, kept the forces of Mordor at bay," the bottom right of Legolas' cloak is now at his side. When Aragorn says, "You can not wield it, none of us can," the bottom right of Legolas' cloak is between his legs. Just before Legolas rises to say, "This is no mere Ranger," the bottom of both sides of Legolas' cloak are on his knees again. (Time) Submitted by Rikki

Mistake Continuity: Pippin is falling down the hill after the incident with Farmer Maggot. In the shot from above, we see he is about to land with his chest right on top of the pile of dung. Yet, in the successive side shot of him, the dung is obviously not beneath his body, and we see in the next shot of his face, that the dung is now in front of his face, for him to remark, "Oh, that was close!" Mistake Revealing: While Bilbo stretches at his desk and calls out "Frodo, someone at the door" the words on the page in his book can be seen. The last line written is these four words "among the very wise." Yet in the next close-up shot of Bilbo writing again, the last line on the page is these five words: "counted among the very wise." They are different variations of the same page in Bilbo's book used in these two shots. (Time) Submitted by Rikki

Mistake Continuity: As Bilbo is writing, in the close-up shot of Bilbo dipping his quill into the ink well the arrangement of the ink well, other bottles and various items on the shelf differs from the next close-up shot when he stretches at his desk and calls out, "Frodo, someone at the door!" Mistake Revealing: During the prologue, in the first shot of Sauron's dismembered finger with the Ring on the ground next to Isildur, the bottom of the letters are facing the remaining finger. It is the line, "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them." In the next close-up of the dismembered finger, when Isildur picks it up, the Ring is now on the finger upside down from the previous shot, with the bottom of the letters facing the cut side of the finger. The words, "One Ring to find them," can be seen in this shot. (Time) Submitted by Rikki

Mistake Continuity: Up on Weathertop, Aragorn throws a flaming torch at the Nazgul, and it hits him in the face, and there are flames inside the hood. In the next shot, the flames are on the outside of the hood, shoulder and sleeve, but there are no flames inside the hood, where they were in the previous shot. In this shot too, the stick from the torch shown is shorter than before. In the next shot, the flames are inside the hood again and the stick is much longer. (Time) Submitted by Rikki

Mistake Continuity: After Frodo rescues a drowning Sam and Sam declares that he made a promise not to leave Frodo, they embrace. In the first two close-ups, Frodo is clutching Sam's shoulder with his right hand, and his right arm doesn't go all the way around Sam's back. In the far wide shot, Frodo's arms go over Sam's shoulder and reach all the way around Sam's back in a tight hug. In the very next close-up, they are in the exact same positions as in the previous close-up. Since these are successive shots, the excuse can not be made that in the wide shot, Frodo put his arm around Sam differently. (Time) Submitted by Rikki

Mistake Continuity: After leaving the Mines of Moria, the Fellowship flee toward Lothlorien. Aragorn runs through a rocky bed of water, stops and smiles looking ahead. In the shot from the front, the top of his bow is hardly seen at his shoulder, but in the shot from behind the top of the bow is way up higher than his shoulder. (Time) Submitted by Rikki

Mistake Continuity: When Gandalf gets the doors open to the mines, the doors open and you can see Gimli's axe on the right. The camera angle changes to a close-up of Gimli and he is seen in a sitting position smoking his pipe turning his head to the doors. The camera angle changes to a wide shot and he is seen standing with his axe in his hand. (Time)

Screen shot Continuity: Just after Gandalf enters Bag End for the first time he looks the map of Middle Earth on the table. In first shot when he is grabbing the map, you can see that there are two scrolls and a flat empty paper stacked on the map. In next shot, there is only one scroll and a paper with some kind of pattern on it. (Time)

Screen shot Continuity: When the Fellowship is sailing down the river (through the two statues) the foot of the left statue looks as if it's at the same level as the water. Then in the next scene (camera angle from above) the foot is not at water level; it appears to be on a rock. (Time)

Mistake Continuity: When Frodo rescues Sam he grabs hold of his wrist and pulls him into the boat. In the shot in which Frodo grabs hold of the side of the boat with his left hand while pulling Sam into the boat with his right hand, we see the large brown mat on the floor of the boat. In this shot the mat is under Frodo's legs and Sam's sword is not at all under his cloak. In the following shot behind Frodo as Sam is trying to sit up the mat is not under Frodo's legs but only under Sam, and Sam's sword is now entirely under his cloak. (Time) Submitted by Rikki

Mistake Continuity: When Gandalf is facing off with the Balrog on the bridge, he is seen from a wide camera angle as having his illuminated staff directly in front of him. When the camera angle switches to a close up, the staff is no longer in front of him. The camera angle changes to a wide view and the staff is seen in front of him again. (Time)

Mistake Continuity: During the prologue, after Sauron strikes Elendil, we see Narsil falling right at the corner of a dirtless, sandless smooth rockface and the sword has only some blood stains on it. When Isildur grabs Narsil, it is now in the middle of dirty, sandy rock, and the sword has dirt all over it now. (Time) Submitted by Rikki

Mistake Revealing: When Saruman and Gandalf are dueling in the tower, Saruman throws Gandalf above a door with his staff. Gandalf is stuck there, but when he falls, the wall moves very slightly.

Mistake Continuity: When Pippin says "What about second breakfast?" he's crouched over by the pony, a bit away from Merry. Aragorn says a line and the camera goes back to the Hobbits. Now Pippin is further from the pony standing right by Merry, not crouched at all. He couldn't have moved that far during Aragorn's line and be standing so naturally.

Mistake Continuity: At Bag End, Bilbo invites Gandalf in and he hands Bilbo his staff and hat. Before the hand off, the knot of the wrist strap on the staff is seen just as Gandalf says, "Bilbo Baggins." and the rim of his hat is seen throughout. After the hand off, as Bilbo carries the large staff in front of him, the strap hangs down and it's a different knot than seen before. The rim of the huge prop hat is seen when Bilbo puts it down and there is a slice on the rim that was not there before. (Time) Submitted by Rikki
